Preparing to Take Your Ring Overseas

Planning to pop the question abroad? Here are some tips to ensure your engagement ring travels safely:

1. Keep It in Your Carry-On: Never place the ring in checked luggage. Keep it in your carry-on to ensure it stays safe and secure.

2. Use Discreet Packaging: To keep the proposal a surprise, opt for a compact, inconspicuous box or pouch.

3. Consider Insurance: Before traveling, invest in comprehensive jewellery insurance that covers international trips. We recommend QReport for your jewellery insurance and when you purchase a custom made engagement ring with our team, we will help guide you through the insurance process.

4. Be Prepared for Security: Airport security checks can be a challenge. Let the staff know discreetly that you have a ring to avoid spoiling the surprise.

Creating the Perfect Overseas Proposal

The location sets the stage, but the magic is in the details. Whether it’s under the Eiffel Tower, on a beach in Bali, or atop a snowy mountain in New Zealand, here are some tips to make your proposal unforgettable:

• Scout the Spot: Research locations beforehand or ask for recommendations to find the perfect setting.

• Time It Right: Propose during golden hour or at a quiet moment to make it extra special.

• Capture the Moment: Consider hiring a local photographer or setting up a discreet recording to document the moment.

The Beauty of an Australian-Designed Ring

There’s something special about taking an Australian-designed engagement ring across the globe. It’s not just a ring—it’s a reflection of your love story, crafted with care and made to stand the test of time.

Valentine’s Day: The perfect time to Design Her Dream Jewellery

Valentine’s Day: The perfect time to Design Her Dream Jewellery

As Valentine’s Day draws near, the season of love is the perfect opportunity to celebrate your special connection with a gift she’ll treasure forever. This year, why not go beyond the traditional chocolates and flowers? From designing her a custom ring to choosing a delicate bracelet or timeless necklace, let your gift speak to her unique style and the bond you share.

Here’s how you can make this Valentine’s Day unforgettable with bespoke and meaningful jewellery.

Design Her Dream Ring

Nothing says “forever” quite like a custom-designed ring. Whether you’re planning to propose or simply want to gift her a symbolic piece, creating a bespoke ring is a deeply personal way to show your love.

• Engagement Rings on Valentine’s Day — February 14 is a popular day for proposals, and what could be more romantic than designing a ring that’s as unique as she is? From selecting the perfect diamond to choosing a setting that reflects her style, this is a gift she’ll remember for a lifetime.

• Promise Rings: Not ready for an engagement? A promise ring is a heartfelt way to celebrate your commitment and future together.

The process of designing a custom ring is easier than you think—and it’s a meaningful experience that ensures every detail is perfect.

Designing Her Dream Ring for Valentine’s Day: The Ultimate Romantic Gesture

February 14th has long been a day for grand romantic gestures, and it’s no wonder that Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular dates for proposals. What could be more heartfelt than presenting a ring that’s not only a symbol of your love but also as unique as the person you’re giving it to? At Morgan & Co, we believe the journey of designing an engagement ring should be just as meaningful as the proposal itself.

When you work with our team, you’re not just creating a piece of jewellery — you’re crafting a lifelong memory. From selecting the perfect diamond or gemstone to choosing a setting that reflects her individual style, every detail of the design process can be tailored to ensure it captures your partner’s personality and the essence of your love story.

Keeping the Surprise Without Compromising the Design

We understand that one of the most magical aspects of a proposal is the element of surprise. But what if you’re unsure about her exact style or want her to be involved in the design process? Don’t worry — we’ve got you covered!

At Morgan & Co, we offer a thoughtful solution: a placeholder ring. This allows you to propose with something beautiful in hand, symbolising your commitment, while still giving her the opportunity to create her dream engagement ring. Imagine her joy when you surprise her with a studio appointment on Valentine’s Day, where the two of you can design the ring together.

An Experience to Remember

Our bespoke ring design experience is made extra special for Valentine’s Day. When you bring your partner into our studio, we’ll create a romantic atmosphere complete with champagne, flowers, and a personalised consultation. Together, you’ll explore diamonds, gemstones, and design options, ensuring the final piece is something she’ll treasure forever. This collaborative process not only results in the perfect ring but also adds a unique chapter to your love story — one filled with shared creativity and excitement.

Seasonal Proposal Trends: The Best Times to Pop the Question in Australia

Seasonal Proposal Trends: The Best Times to Pop the Question in Australia

Australia’s unique seasonal calendar offers breathtaking backdrops for proposals all year round. Whether you’re envisioning a sunlit beach proposal in summer or a cozy, fireside engagement in winter, each season brings its own magic to your love story. Thoughtfully planning your proposal around Australia’s seasons can add an unforgettable, meaningful touch to the moment you say, “Will you marry me?”

Here’s a deeper dive into the best seasonal trends in Australia and creative ways to make your proposal truly extraordinary.

Summer — Sunlit and Vibrant (December–February)

Australian summers radiate energy, warmth, and adventure. With long, sun-filled days and the festive spirit of the season, summer proposals can be as carefree or grand as you like.

Top Proposal Ideas for Summer:

  • Beachfront Bliss: Picture this: a romantic stroll on a quiet beach at sunset. Write “Will you marry me?” in the sand or surprise your partner with a picnic on the shore, complete with fairy lights and champagne. The rhythmic sound of waves will make the moment unforgettable.

  • Destination Getaways: Summer is synonymous with vacations, making it a perfect time to plan a proposal in paradise. The Whitsundays, with its pristine waters, or Byron Bay, with its relaxed coastal vibe, provide stunning, natural backdrops for popping the question.

  • Holiday Celebrations: Why not incorporate your proposal into a festive gathering? A New Year’s Eve proposal during a fireworks display or a heartfelt moment at a family Christmas celebration will add an extra layer of joy and significance to the occasion.

Autumn — Cozy and Intimate (March–May)

Autumn in Australia is a time of golden hues and cooler, comfortable weather. It’s the perfect season for heartfelt, intimate proposals surrounded by nature’s changing beauty.

Top Proposal Ideas for Autumn:

  • Nature Trails: Take your partner on a scenic walk through tree-lined trails adorned with autumn foliage. Bring along a picnic blanket and a basket of their favourite treats for a surprise proposal amidst the season’s stunning colours.

  • Harvest Charm: Vineyards and orchards come alive during autumn. Plan a romantic day picking fresh fruit or wine tasting, and propose as the sun sets over the vines. Many venues even offer secluded spots for a private, intimate moment.

  • Easter Surprise: Easter is a time for family and connection. Use this opportunity for a surprise proposal during a family gathering or a weekend getaway. Hide the ring in an Easter egg for a playful twist, or include it in an elegant holiday gift box.

Winter — Magical and Romantic (June–August)

Winter proposals in Australia embrace cozy, intimate settings that create a sense of warmth and connection. From fireside moments to snowy landscapes, the season is brimming with charm.

Top Proposal Ideas for Winter:

  • Mountain Retreats: Head to the Snowy Mountains or Falls Creek for a snowy, romantic escape. Propose on a scenic mountaintop after a day of adventure or in front of a roaring fireplace at a secluded lodge.

  • City Lights: Winter nights bring a certain sparkle to cityscapes. Plan a sophisticated dinner proposal overlooking the glittering city lights in Sydney or Melbourne. Many rooftop restaurants and bars offer private spaces perfect for an unforgettable moment.

  • Winter Festivals: Use the magic of a winter festival, such as a light show or Christmas in July event, as the backdrop for your proposal. The festive atmosphere will make the moment even more memorable.

Spring — Fresh Beginnings (September–November)

Spring in Australia bursts with life and colour, symbolising fresh beginnings—the perfect season for starting your journey together.

Top Proposal Ideas for Spring:

  • Floral Backdrops: Propose amidst blooming flowers at a botanical garden, under a canopy of cherry blossoms, or during a picnic surrounded by vibrant wildflowers. These picturesque settings naturally enhance the romance of the moment.

  • Outdoor Adventures: For adventurous couples, a scenic hike ending with breathtaking views or a sunrise hot air balloon ride offers an awe-inspiring setting for your proposal. The beauty of spring provides endless options.

  • Spring Racing Carnival: The glamour of the spring races, with its festive atmosphere and elegant style, offers a unique opportunity to pop the question. Choose a quiet moment during the day to ask your partner to spend forever with you.

Timeless Tips for Any Season

While each season has its charm, some proposal ideas work beautifully year-round:

  • Personalised Locations: Choose a location with sentimental value, such as the spot where you had your first date, shared your first kiss, or made a significant memory together.
  • Capture the Moment: Hire a photographer or videographer to discreetly document your proposal, so you can relive the moment for years to come.
  • Morgan & Co Partners: View our Partner's Page for reputable vendors on the Sunshine Coast should you choose to pop the question on Australia's Sunshine Coast.
  • Bespoke Engagement Rings: A custom engagement ring is a timeless way to make your proposal even more special. Designed to reflect your partner’s unique style, it adds a personal touch that they’ll treasure forever.

When to Start Shopping for an Engagement Ring: Your Ultimate Guide

When to Start Shopping for an Engagement Ring: Your Ultimate Guide

Planning an engagement or wedding proposal is a momentous occasion filled with excitement, anticipation, and love. While the proposal itself will undoubtedly be unforgettable, the ring you choose symbolises your commitment and becomes a lasting memory of the special day. Timing is everything when it comes to finding the perfect ring. Here’s a comprehensive guide to ensure your journey to the perfect proposal is seamless and stress-free.

1. Factor in Custom Design Timelines

Custom engagement rings are a meaningful way to express your unique love story, but they require time. The process of designing a bespoke ring involves consultations, design approvals, sourcing materials, and the craftsmanship itself. On average, a custom ring takes between 4–12 weeks to complete, though more intricate designs may take longer.

Starting early gives you the luxury of exploring design options without feeling rushed. It also allows for unexpected delays, such as sourcing rare gemstones or crafting complex details.

Tip: Begin the design process at least 3–4 months before your planned proposal date. This ensures there’s ample time for adjustments and final touches.

2. Allow Time for Research

Finding the perfect engagement ring involves a discovery phase where you explore styles, materials, and jewellers. Whether you’re considering a timeless solitaire, a vintage-inspired setting, or a modern halo design, this step is about narrowing down your preferences.

Visit local jewellers, explore online galleries, and gather inspiration from social media or magazines. If you’re not sure what style suits your partner, subtle conversations about their preferences or hints from close friends and family can be invaluable.

Tip: Dedicate 2–3 weeks to the research phase. This ensures you have enough time to make informed decisions and avoid feeling overwhelmed.

3. Account for Ring Sizing Adjustments

Even if you’ve done your homework, getting the ring size perfectly right can be tricky. Sizing adjustments are a common part of the process and typically take 1–2 weeks to complete. However, during peak seasons, this timeline can extend.

For the smoothest experience, aim to have the ring ready and sized at least a month before your proposal. This gives you time to address any unexpected changes without cutting it too close to the big day.

Tip: If you’re unsure of your partner’s size, borrow a ring they wear on the correct finger or trace its outline to bring to the jeweller.

4. Consider Proposal Planning

The ring is just one part of the equation—your proposal plans matter, too. Whether you’re planning a romantic dinner, a scenic hike, or a destination proposal, having the ring ready well in advance is crucial.

Being prepared allows you to focus on orchestrating a memorable proposal rather than worrying about logistical hiccups. Have the ring secured and ready at least two weeks before your proposal date.

5. Busy Seasons Require Extra Time

Jewellery studios often experience higher demand during the festive season, Valentine’s Day, and spring/summer wedding months. If your proposal coincides with one of these peak periods, it’s wise to start shopping 6 months in advance.

By planning early, you’ll avoid delays and have access to a broader selection of materials and services.

6. Don’t Forget Insurance

Once you’ve found the perfect ring, protect it with jewellery insurance. Insurance provides peace of mind and safeguards your investment. Many insurers require an appraisal, which takes a few extra days to organise.

Tip: Allow at least 1–2 weeks to handle the appraisal and finalise insurance paperwork.

Suggested Timeline at a Glance

Step Timeline Before Proposal
Research styles 3–6 months
Begin custom design 3–4 months
Finalise the ring 1 month
Plan resizing/insurance 2–3 weeks

January's Birthstone: The Garnet

January's Birthstone: The Garnet

As the new year begins, January brings with it a sense of fresh starts, new goals, and the promise of growth. For those lucky enough to be born in this vibrant month, garnet, the January birthstone, is the perfect gem to symbolise their unique qualities. Garnet is not just a stunning gemstone; it’s steeped in history, symbolism, and beauty that has captivated people for centuries. Let me take you on a journey into the world of garnets and why this gem deserves to be celebrated — especially if you’re planning a meaningful piece of jewellery.

The Allure of Garnet

When most people think of garnet, they picture a deep, rich red stone. While red garnets are the most well-known, this gemstone is far more versatile than many realise. Garnets come in a range of colours, including fiery orange, lush green, and even rare blue hues. This variety ensures there’s a garnet for everyone, making it a highly versatile choice for jewellery.

The name “garnet” is derived from the Latin word granatum, meaning pomegranate, because the vibrant red crystals resemble the seeds of the fruit. This connection to nature adds an organic and timeless quality to garnet’s appeal. The deep, warm hues of the stone are a natural fit for January, a month often associated with the cozy richness of winter and the promise of renewal.

Garnet Through History

Garnets have a fascinating history that stretches back thousands of years. In ancient Egypt, they were used as inlays in jewellery and talismans, prized for their protective properties. The Romans exchanged garnet signet rings as symbols of trust and friendship. During the Middle Ages, garnets were believed to protect warriors in battle and bring peace and prosperity to their owners.

To me, the historical significance of garnet makes it an especially meaningful gemstone to work with. When I create a piece featuring garnet, I think about its long journey through time and its ability to carry stories across generations. Isn’t that what jewellery is all about? Preserving memories and creating heirlooms that hold meaning for years to come.

Symbolism and Meaning

Garnet is often associated with love, passion, and energy. It’s thought to inspire confidence and strengthen relationships, making it a particularly meaningful gift for someone you care deeply about. As a birthstone, garnet represents protection and strength, qualities that resonate with many of us as we embark on the new year.

What I love most about garnet is how it combines boldness with elegance. It’s a gem that stands out yet feels timeless—a perfect metaphor for someone born in January who embraces life with courage and grace.

Designing with Garnet at Morgan & Co.

One of the joys of being a jewellery designer is taking a gem like garnet and crafting it into something truly special. Whether it’s a bespoke ring, a pair of elegant earrings, or a pendant with a modern twist, garnet’s versatility allows for endless creativity.

Recently, I had the pleasure of designing a custom garnet ring for a client celebrating their January birthday. They chose a deep red garnet as the centerepiece, set in 18ct rose gold. The combination of the warm tones of the gold with the richness of the garnet was breathtaking. To make the piece even more personal, we added a small, hidden engraving inside the band with their initials and birth date. These little touches are what make custom jewellery so meaningful.

If you’re considering a garnet piece, the options are endless. Garnets look stunning in vintage-inspired designs, particularly when paired with diamonds or other accent stones. For a contemporary look, a bold garnet solitaire in a sleek bezel setting can make a powerful statement.

Why Garnet Makes the Perfect Gift

Whether you’re shopping for a January baby or simply looking for a gemstone with rich meaning and beauty, garnet is a fantastic choice. It’s a stone that speaks of love, strength, and resilience, making it ideal for marking special occasions or milestones.

At Morgan & Co., we’re passionate about helping clients find the perfect gemstone and creating pieces that tell their stories. If you’re thinking about a garnet design, I’d love to guide you through the process and bring your vision to life. There’s something incredibly rewarding about knowing a piece we’ve created will become part of someone’s most cherished memories.

Sunshine Coast Inspiration

Living and working on the Sunshine Coast, I often draw inspiration from the natural beauty that surrounds us. The rich, earthy tones of garnet remind me of the vibrant sunsets and lush hinterlands of our region. It’s a gem that feels perfectly suited to our coastal lifestyle — bold, natural, and full of life.

If you’re considering a garnet piece, I encourage you to visit us at our Buderim studio — book your complementary consultation and let’s design something that not only celebrates this stunning gemstone but also reflects your unique story. After all, every piece of jewellery should be as extraordinary as the person who wears it.

Here’s to a sparkling January filled with the beauty of garnet and the promise of new beginnings. Cheers to making 2025 unforgettable!

A New Chapter for a Tanzanite Treasure: A Stunning Remodel Story

A New Chapter for a Tanzanite Treasure: A Stunning Remodel Story

Our client's remodel was based on an existing ring that featured a 9.57 x 6.93mm Tanzanite elongated cushion cut gemstone.

The tanzanite we worked with was top-quality and exhibited a beautiful vivid violet/blue, reminiscent of a fine sapphire, but with a violet hue. The hue of the stone appears on the purple side due to the cutting process of this particular stone.

Under cooler lighting, such as daylight or fluorescent light, the blue tones of the  tanzanite are more pronounced. In warmer lighting, like incandescent light, the stone tends to appear more violet to purple.

Before Image

After Image

The Why

Our client no longer wore the ring she was given to her husband because the setting was too ostentatious for everyday wear. We set out on a journey to remodel our lovely client's ring to ultimately reset the stone and breathe new life into a once loved ring. Remodelling allowed our client to preserve the sentimental value of the original piece while creating something fresh and more in line with her current style.

How long does the remodel process take?

Here at Morgan & Co Jewellery we take as long as necessary to make sure that our clients are one hundred percent happy with their design before we go to manufacture.

Our typical turnaround time for resetting or custom jewellery projects is around 6-8 weeks. However, this can vary depending on the specific requirements of each job. If additional stones or diamonds need to be sourced, or if your gemstones need to be re-cut, we may require a little more time to ensure everything is done to perfection. We’ll keep you informed throughout the process and work with you to meet any specific deadlines where possible.

The time frame for this project took ten weeks. We had three separate consultations with our clients, the first consultation focused on a around the table discussion about the origin of the ring, the clients expectations and inspiration. Here at Morgan & Co we love the stories behind each piece of jewellery that comes in for remodelling. We draw inspiration for the new design by incorporating our clients' memories, lifestyle and fashion sense into their new design.

The second consultation focuses on presenting the preliminary drawings to our clients for review. Any design adjustments are discussed and documented. At this stage, we confirm the gold colour for the ring; in this instance, the client selected 18ct yellow gold. Finalising the setting style is crucial, and the client opted to position the tanzanite stone east to west in a sleek half-bezel setting, offering a modern and stylish approach.

The last consultation we had with our client was to present the final drawings and CAD. The CAD is a computerised drawing that lists the size of the ring, the depth and width of the band, the height of the setting and any other elements that was discussed in the second consultation. Once all aspects of the ring were finalised by the client the manufacturing process began.

Client's gold

Morgan & Co can repurpose your gold in certain circumstances. However, melting different metals together can indeed be problematic, especially when it comes to jewellery made from alloys like 18 carat gold as was the case with this remodel. In an 18 carat gold ring, the gold is 75% pure, with the remaining 25% composed of various other metals to enhance durability. This blend of metals is called an alloy, and the specific mix of additional metals can vary greatly, meaning that each gold alloy is unique.

The challenge arises when you don't know the exact composition of the alloy. Even if the ring comes from the same company, they may no longer use the same alloy mixture. There are thousands of gold alloys in existence, and mixing different alloys can lead to issues. For example, combining two alloys might result in the metal becoming softer, more brittle, or prone to cracking.

Another factor is that you may not know if the ring has already been melted down and remade from other recycled rings, adding even more variability to the metal's composition. These uncertainties make it risky to melt down gold jewellery for reuse, as doing so could weaken the metal or alter its properties in unintended ways.

In short, the process of melting different alloys together can compromise the strength, structure, or appearance of the resulting metal, making it less reliable for new jewellery. In this case we did not change it, we used  new gold for this design.

The cost of remodelling

At Morgan & Co, we are experts in remodelling and this beautiful process is a core part of our business. Time and time again, we see our clients are surprised at the cost of remodelling.

Remodelling an engagement ring or any piece of jewellery is not cheap due to several factors, including gold prices, design complexity, and setting costs. Here’s a breakdown of why remodelling tends to be a significant investment —

Gold Price

While the price of gold is one element, it’s not the sole reason for the cost. Gold is valuable and prices fluctuate based on market conditions. In a remodelling project, gold may be reused or new gold may be required, depending on the nature of the changes.

Design and labour costs

Design and labour costs play a significant role in remodelling old and preloved jewellery, reflecting the craftsmanship and expertise required to bring a vision to life. Each piece is unique, and creating a new design often involves reimagining and reshaping an existing structure, which demands a meticulous approach. From the initial consultations and detailed sketches to the creation of CAD designs, every step is tailored to ensure the final piece aligns with the client's vision. Skilled jewellers invest time and precision in handcrafting the new design, carefully resetting stones, adjusting metalwork, and ensuring the structural integrity of the finished piece. This intricate process not only preserves the sentimental value of heirloom jewellery but also transforms it into a bespoke treasure, justifying the investment in time, creativity, and craftsmanship.

Customisation and Design Expertise

Remodelling involves more than just tweaking an existing design. Our skilled  jewelleers must evaluate the current piece, discuss your vision, and create a new design that meets your expectations. This process takes time, creativity, and expertise. Depending on the complexity of the design, it may require the jeweller to essentially rebuild the piece, which is why starting costs can be high.

Craftsmanship

Jewellery making is a highly skilled art that requires precise and intricate work. Whether it’s remaking a ring from scratch or reworking an existing piece, jewellers need to carefully reshape, resize, and solder metals, set stones, and ensure the structural integrity of the new piece. This level of craftsmanship demands both time and expertise, which is reflected in the price.

Handwork vs. Machine Work

In many cases, remodelling involves handwork rather than machine work, making the process more labor-intensive. Hand-setting stones, adjusting prongs, and fine-tuning the design often require hours of skilled labor.

Stone Setting and Handling

Removing and Resetting Stones — One of the most delicate parts of remodelling is removing and resetting gemstones, particularly diamonds and other precious stones. This process requires extreme care to avoid damaging the stones. Stones may need to be cleaned, recut, or re-polished during the remodelling process, which adds to the cost.

Stone Matching — If additional gemstones are needed, sourcing stones that match the existing ones in colour, clarity, and size can be a time-consuming and costly process.

Precision and Durability

Remodelling a ring isn’t just about aesthetic changes. We must also ensure that the final piece is structurally sound and durable enough for daily wear. This means inspecting and reinforcing the prongs, shank, and other components to avoid issues like gemstone loss or band weakness. Achieving both beauty and durability requires detailed, precise work, which drives up the overall cost.

In summary, remodelling involves a combination of factors such as material costs, design labor, expert craftsmanship, stone handling, and ensuring the durability of the piece. These elements together explain why remodelling is not a cheap process but rather an investment in creating a personalised, high-quality piece of jewellery that you can cherish for years to come.

Top 5 Jewellery Trends — Beyond Engagement Rings

  1. Bold, Oversized Pieces

Chunky, oversized jewellery is making waves in 2025. Think bold cuff bangles, oversized earrings, and statement necklaces. These pieces are perfect for making a striking impression, whether dressed up for an event or elevating a casual look. Bold pieces are all about confidence, and we’re here to help you embrace the trend with bespoke designs.

  2. Modern Pearls

Pearls have undergone a contemporary transformation and are now being incorporated into dress, casual, and bridal jewellery. Whether it’s sleek pearl earrings, layered pearl necklaces, or avant-garde pearl rings, these modern takes on a classic gem are versatile and fresh. At Morgan & Co, we love designing pieces that blend traditional elegance with a modern edge. Our stunning freshwater drop pearl earrings are our favourite bridal earrings that match perfectly with our freshwater pendant necklace

  3. Art Deco-Inspired Designs

Art Deco remains a strong influence in jewellery design, with geometric patterns, intricate detailing, and bold contrasts taking centre stage. This style is perfect for those who love vintage glamour with a contemporary twist. We can create bespoke jewellery inspired by the opulence and sophistication of the Art Deco era, tailored to your unique taste.

  4. Bold Coloured Dress Rings

Bold coloured dress rings featuring birthstones or sentimental hues are set to be a major trend this year. These pieces make a statement and hold personal meaning, often celebrating milestones or representing cherished memories. Whether you want a striking cocktail ring or a subtle nod to a special moment, we can craft something that’s uniquely yours.

  5. Sentimental Jewellery

In 2025, jewellery continues to tell stories. From necklaces engraved with meaningful dates to rings featuring hidden gemstones, sentimental jewellery is more popular than ever. These pieces go beyond beauty, serving as a reflection of your journey and values.

How Much Should I Spend on an Engagement Ring: The Cost of an Engagement Ring in 2025

How Much Should I Spend on an Engagement Ring: The Cost of an Engagement Ring in 2025

When it comes to planning a proposal, one of the most frequently asked questions I get is: “How much should I spend on an engagement ring?” It’s a topic that’s steeped in tradition, but in 2025, the answer isn’t as straightforward as it might have been decades ago. Trends, values, and personal priorities have all evolved, and that’s why I want to share my perspective to help you navigate this important decision.

Forget the "Three Months' Salary" Rule

Traditionally, there was a so-called "rule" that suggested spending three months’ salary on an engagement ring. This idea originated from clever marketing campaigns decades ago, and while it has lingered, it’s not a practical guideline for everyone. In 2025, the better approach is to focus on what feels right for you and your financial situation. Your relationship isn’t defined by a specific price tag, and your engagement ring shouldn’t be either. At Morgan & Co, we prioritise working within your budget to ensure you feel confident and comfortable with the cost of your partner's engagement ring. By adjusting elements like diamond quality, we can help you create the ring of your dreams at a price that feels just right.

Consider Your Budget

The first step is to assess your finances. How much can you comfortably spend without compromising other financial goals or causing stress? Take into account your current expenses, savings, and any upcoming costs—such as a wedding or a future home purchase. This isn’t about being frugal; it’s about being thoughtful. I always advise clients to strike a balance between quality and affordability, ensuring they invest in a piece they truly love without stretching themselves too thin.

Personalisation Over Price

One of the most exciting aspects of engagement rings today is the ability to create something entirely unique. Custom design allows you to focus on meaning and craftsmanship rather than simply following trends or adhering to a price bracket. I’ve worked with clients who prioritised rare gemstones, sentimental engravings, or heirloom-inspired designs. These personal touches often carry far more emotional value than a ring’s dollar amount.

For example, lab-grown diamonds have gained significant popularity in recent years. They’re identical to natural diamonds in every way but come at a lower cost, allowing you to allocate more of your budget toward customisation. Similarly, alternative gemstones like sapphires or emeralds can make a ring stand out while being budget-friendly.

View our custom engagement ring collection here for some inspiration.

Some favourites at a lower price point are —

The Stevie Ring: By choosing a solitaire with a lab grown diamond, you're able to bring your price down a little as there is only one diamond to buy and set.

The Roberta Ring: A delicate ring, such as The Roberta Ring, is a diamond engagement ring that has a lower price point due to the smaller size of the main diamond.

View below some higher price point diamond engagement rings —

The Lucy Ring: A Toi et Moi ring is at a higher price point due to having to purchase two diamonds in the one ring.

The Ellise Ring: This is a trilogy ring featuring three diamonds and due to purchasing and setting three quite large diamonds, the price point is at the higher end.

Educate Yourself on the "4 Cs"

When investing in a diamond, it’s crucial to understand the "4 Cs": cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. These factors determine a diamond’s overall quality and value. However, the trick is knowing which of these aspects matters most to you. For many, the cut—which affects a diamond’s sparkle—is the most important. Others may prioritise carat size or the absence of inclusions.

By understanding the 4 Cs, you can make informed decisions that maximise your budget. For instance, opting for a slightly lower colour grade that still appears white to the naked eye can free up funds to go toward a larger stone or a more intricate setting. At Morgan & Co, we don't go below a G colour for our diamonds — we want your ring to have a beautiful sparkle, not cloudy or yellow.

Think About Lifestyle and Longevity

Another key consideration is how the ring will fit into your partner’s lifestyle. Do they have an active job or hobbies that might put the ring at risk for damage? If so, a durable setting or a lower-profile design might be better suited for everyday wear.

Additionally, think about longevity. This ring is meant to last a lifetime, so prioritise timeless designs and quality craftsmanship. Trends come and go, but classic styles—whether that’s a solitaire diamond or an elegant halo setting —remain enduringly beautiful.

Your Partner’s Input Matters

If possible, try to gauge your partner’s preferences. Some people love surprises, while others appreciate being part of the selection process. Either way, understanding their style, metal preference, and desired gemstone can help guide your choice and ensure the ring feels like an extension of their personality. If you prefer to keep the proposal a surprise, but want to involve your partner in the design process, read our blog on "The Modern Proposal Approach" which gives you ideas on how to propose but not get the ring wrong!

Final Thoughts

In 2025, the “right” amount to spend on an engagement ring is entirely personal. It’s about aligning your budget, your partner’s tastes, and your shared values. Whether you’re investing $5,000 or $20,000, the most important thing is that the ring symbolises your love and commitment — something no price tag can measure.

At Morgan & Co, we can source natural diamonds, lab grown diamonds, as well as natural coloured gemstones. Once we establish your budget, we can help guide you with what you can afford for your price point. Our engagement rings start from $4,900.

At Morgan & Co, we’re here to guide you through the process, ensuring you feel confident and informed every step of the way. From selecting the perfect stone to designing a setting that tells your unique story, we’re dedicated to helping you create a piece that’s as special as the person you’re giving it to. After all, the most valuable thing about an engagement ring is the love it represents.

Vintage Rings: Four Common Issues With Antique Rings

Vintage Rings: Four Common Issues With Antique Rings

Vintage rings, especially Art deco designed rings crafted centuries ago, stand the test of time, however these rings over decades are exposed to the elements and the wear and tear of daily life.

Fortunately, Morgan & Co are experts in detailing precious vintage rings. Such rings undergo a thorough inspection, cleaning, polishing, and repair (if needed) to ensure it's in excellent condition.

However, light accidental damage is sometimes unavoidable. This guide is here to help you understand some of the most common issues that can occur with vintage rings and the solutions available to fix them, ensuring your ring remains a cherished symbol for years to come.

Issue one —

The claw setting, often seen in Art deco antique rings, involves prongs that securely hold the central gemstone. Though they serve a vital function, these metal prongs are thin and can occasionally break, especially after snagging on things like clothing. Over time, even regular wear, skin acidity, or general degradation can cause these prongs to weaken, resulting in them becoming too fragile to hold the stone.

It's important to regularly check for signs of damage, such as a prong that feels raised or the sound of a rattling stone, which could indicate a loose setting. Morgan & Co recommend your ring be  inspected twice a year.

If a claw breaks, repairing it is usually straightforward. We may perform a process called re-tipping, where our master jeweller adds metal to the prong using a laser. In some cases, the entire prong might need replacing, which is a more complex repair that could slightly alter the ring’s appearance.

Issue two —

Vintage rings as any other ring  inevitably show wear over time, with minor scratches being a common sign of daily use. The best way to protect the longevity of your vintage ring is through careful handling. It's wise to remove the ring during activities that could put it at risk, such as exercising, playing sports, lifting heavy items, gardening, or doing housework. Try to minimise contact with hard surfaces (like car keys and door handles) and avoid exposure to harsh chemicals, which can react with the metal.

Morgan & Co can restore your vintage ring’s  shine by gently  buffing  and polishing your ring with our specialised polishing machines. However, frequent polishing is not recommended as machine polishing removes a small layer of metal each time, which can affect the ring’s durability in the long term.

For rings with delicate engravings or milgrain beading, it’s often better to avoid polishing altogether. These intricate details can be worn down during the process, so embracing the natural signs of wear can become part of the ring's charm. Many people come to appreciate the unique scuffs and scratches as part of their ring's story and history.

Issue three —

White gold vintage rings can fade or become discoloured over time due to the nature of the alloy. White gold is typically made from 75%  gold mixed with 25% other metals, such as palladium, which give it a more silvery-white appearance. However, even with these white metals, the alloy still retains a slight grey tint. To counteract this, white gold is usually plated with rhodium, a bright white metal that enhances its colour.

Rhodium plating, while effective, wears off gradually with use, eventually revealing the grey tones  underneath. How quickly this happens varies based on factors like how you care for the ring, the types of activities you do while wearing it, and even your skin's acidity.

To maintain the bright white appearance of your white gold ring, we suggest having it re-plated with rhodium every couple of years.. Regular re-plating helps keep your ring looking as vibrant as when it was first purchased.

Issue four —

Diamonds, while the hardest natural substance on earth, can still suffer damage, particularly in vulnerable areas like the girdle, where small chips can occur from unfortunate knocks. Scratches and chips often reflect the long, storied lives these diamonds have lived.

However, the ability to repair a diamond depends on the type and extent of the damage. Some people embrace the imperfections in their vintage rings, seeing them as part of the ring’s character and history. Others may prefer to replace the damaged gemstone with a new one. Whatever your preference, we’re happy to offer advice and guide you through the options.

Final Thoughts —

Vintage rings are more than just jewellery; they are pieces of history, love, and artistry. With proper care and expert attention, these treasures can continue to shine as symbols of timeless elegance. At Morgan & Co, we are committed to preserving the beauty and character of your vintage ring, offering tailored solutions for every challenge. Whether it’s repairing a delicate claw, restoring a polished finish, or re-plating white gold, we’re here to ensure your cherished piece remains a part of your story for years to come. Why Heirloom Jewellery Is Back in Style — And Why It’s a Worthy Investment

Why Heirloom Jewellery Is Back in Style — And Why It’s a Worthy Investment

There’s something undeniably magical about heirloom jewellery. It carries history, tells stories, and feels like a tangible connection to the past. Lately, I’ve noticed more and more people turning to heirloom-inspired designs or looking to revive their family pieces, and it’s no surprise. In a world where sustainability and meaningful purchases are becoming priorities, heirloom jewellery offers the perfect blend of timeless beauty and sentimental value.

At Morgan & Co, Sunshine Coast Jewellers, we’ve always been passionate about crafting jewellery that lasts a lifetime—and beyond. The revival of heirloom jewellery feels like a natural extension of what we do: creating pieces that are not only beautiful but deeply personal.

The Timeless Appeal of Heirloom Jewellery

Heirloom jewellery is more than just an accessory; it’s a piece of history. Whether it’s a ring passed down from a grandparent or a new design created with heirloom potential, these pieces hold a charm that transcends trends.

The craftsmanship in heirloom pieces is extraordinary. Vintage jewellery often showcases intricate details and artistry that are hard to find in mass-produced items. It’s not just about the beauty; it’s about the story the piece tells. A vintage-inspired design can evoke a sense of nostalgia while still feeling completely unique.

At Morgan & Co, we take inspiration from these timeless details, incorporating them into our designs while keeping them relevant to today’s styles. Whether it’s a delicate milgrain edge, a classic claw setting, or an old-world gemstone cut, these touches make a piece feel truly special.

An Investment in Beauty and Legacy

Investing in heirloom-quality jewellery isn’t just about owning something beautiful— it’s about creating a legacy. A well-made piece of jewellery will last for generations, growing in sentimental and financial value over time.

Choosing heirloom-quality materials like natural diamonds and 18K gold means you’re not just buying a ring or necklace; you’re investing in a future family treasure. These materials retain their value and can even be repurposed into new designs, ensuring they remain relevant for years to come.

Image: A new ring made using heirloom diamonds from our client's          grandmother and the centre stone from her original engagement ring.

Bringing Old Pieces Back to Life

One of my favourite things we do at Morgan & Co. is helping clients breathe new life into old or pre-loved jewellery. Many people come to us with pieces that are meaningful but don’t quite fit their personal style. Together, we work to reimagine these treasures, keeping their sentiment and vintage feel while creating something that suits them perfectly.

We often reset old diamonds or gemstones into new designs, giving them a fresh start while preserving their history. Mixing metals — such as pairing classic yellow gold with contemporary rose gold — is another way to modernise an heirloom while honouring its origins.

I always say, updating an heirloom doesn’t erase its story; it adds a new chapter.

The Process at Morgan & Co.

We understand that creating or remodelling an heirloom piece is a deeply personal journey. That’s why we offer free consultations to guide you every step of the way. During these one-on-one appointments, we take the time to understand the story behind your jewellery and your vision for its future.

Whether we’re starting from scratch or working with pre-loved materials, the goal is always the same: to create a piece that feels meaningful, timeless, and uniquely yours.

Why Choose Heirloom-Quality Rings?

If you’re planning an engagement or looking for a significant piece, designing with heirloom potential is a beautiful way to balance style and substance. Timeless cuts like round brilliant, emerald, and cushion are always a safe bet, and durable metals like platinum and 18ct gold ensure your ring stands the test of time.

Adding personal touches, such as an engraving or a bespoke setting, makes the piece even more special. It’s these little details that turn a beautiful ring into an heirloom treasure.

Final Thoughts

Heirloom jewellery isn’t just back in style — it’s here to stay. Whether you’re reviving a family piece or investing in a new design, these treasures offer a connection to the past, a celebration of the present, and a gift for the future.

At Morgan & Co, we’re honoured to be part of this legacy. If you’re ready to create or reimagine an heirloom piece, we’d love to guide you through the process. Together, we can craft something timeless that will be cherished for generations to come. Book your free remodel consultation at our Buderim studio.

Because the best jewellery doesn’t just make a statement — it tells a story.

Toi et Moi Rings: A Timeless Love Story Reimagined

Toi et Moi Rings: A Timeless Love Story Reimagined

Few diamond engagement ring styles capture the essence of romance and connection quite like the Toi et Moi design. Translating to "you and me" in French, Toi et Moi rings are the ultimate symbol of two souls coming together. This style has been beloved for centuries and is currently experiencing a modern resurgence as couples seek unique and meaningful ways to express their love.

The Lucy Ring

Creating The Lucy Ring was such an exciting journey, one that truly embodied the magic of custom design. The ring features a stunning natural fancy yellow marquise diamond paired with a high-quality pear-cut lab-grown diamond in a striking toi et moi style. It took several consultations to ensure we found the perfect size, proportion, and shapes to not only complement each other but also suit our client’s finger and vision. We sourced and reviewed multiple diamonds to get the color contrast just right between the yellow and white stones. Once we selected the ideal diamonds, we created a wax model so our client could try it on, ensuring the angles and balance were perfect. While it was a more extended process than usual, every step was worth it. We wanted to ensure our client had her dream forever ring, and seeing her joy at the final result made it all worthwhile.

The Origins of Toi et Moi Rings

The history of Toi et Moi rings is as enchanting as the design itself. The concept dates back to 1796 when Napoleon Bonaparte gifted Josephine a sapphire-and-diamond Toi et Moi ring to mark their engagement. The design was intended to represent two stones—two hearts—joined in eternal love. This romantic sentiment has carried through the ages, making Toi et Moi rings a timeless expression of commitment.

Why Toi et Moi Rings Are Rising in Popularity

In today’s world of personalised love stories, Toi et Moi rings are making a grand comeback. Celebrities like Megan Fox and Emily Ratajkowski have embraced this style, showcasing the beauty of mixing stones, shapes, and sizes to create a design that feels one-of-a-kind. The flexibility of Toi et Moi rings is a big part of their appeal; they offer endless possibilities for customisation, making each piece as unique as the couple it represents.

The Art of Mixing Cuts, Shapes, and Colours

One of the most exciting aspects of Toi et Moi rings is the opportunity to combine different diamond cuts, shapes, and even colours. Imagine the brilliance of a round diamond paired with an elongated pear shape, or the timeless elegance of an oval complemented by a bold emerald cut. The asymmetry of these pairings adds a modern edge to this classic design.

For those looking to infuse a pop of colour, a Toi et Moi ring offers the perfect canvas. A vivid sapphire, emerald, or pink diamond can sit beside a traditional clear diamond, creating a striking contrast that tells its own story. This pairing of colours and shapes creates a bold, meaningful, and unforgettable piece.

Customising a Toi et Moi Ring at Morgan & Co.

At Morgan & Co., we love working with couples to craft their perfect Toi et Moi rings. Whether you dream of a vintage-inspired design or a sleek, modern take on this style, we’ll guide you through every decision—from selecting the stones to designing the setting.

A popular approach is to use a clear diamond alongside a coloured gemstone to reflect contrast and harmony. We also help clients mix diamond sizes and shapes to create balance and symmetry that feels just right. The possibilities are endless, and the result is always a stunning ring that reflects your unique love story.

Bold Bands and Multi-Stone Settings

Toi et Moi rings are also finding their place in the modern trend of bold bands and multi-stone settings. Wider bands enhance the drama of the design, while intricate details like engraving or texture add depth and individuality. Incorporating smaller accent stones or unusual settings into a Toi et Moi ring can further elevate its beauty, making it a true statement piece.

The Importance of Quality and Expertise

When designing a Toi et Moi ring, attention to detail and stone quality are paramount. The craftsmanship required to set two stones in harmony is complex, making it essential to work with a jeweller you trust. At Morgan & Co — your Sunshine Coast Jeweller — we bring expertise and care to every step of the process, ensuring your custom engagement ring not only looks stunning but also stands the test of time.

A Celebration of Love

Toi et Moi rings are more than just jewellery; they are a celebration of love and unity. Whether you’re drawn to the style’s rich history, its endless versatility, or its modern edge, this design is a beautiful way to tell your story. At Morgan & Co, we’re here to help you create a ring that is as unique as your journey together at your free consultation with our expert team.

Because in the end, what could be more romantic than a ring that says, “you and me, forever”?

From Rings to Reality: Sammy & Holly's Dream Wedding Story

From Rings to Reality: Sammy & Holly's Dream Wedding Story

There’s something magical about waking up on the morning of your wedding day. For Sammy and Holly, it was a blend of nerves, excitement, and calm anticipation as they prepared to start the next chapter of their love story. Together, they began the day by sharing an intimate moment, flipping through an album of heartfelt photos and messages crafted by Holly’s Maid of Honour — a gesture that set the tone for a day full of love and connection.

The couple’s wedding was a breathtaking affair in Bali, a place close to their hearts and steeped in significance. From the moment Sammy saw Holly walk down the aisle, radiant and accompanied by her mum and son Lukas, to the heartfelt vows and moving speeches, the day was filled with emotion, joy, and unforgettable moments.

Creating Holly's engagement ring and wedding bands, along with Sammy's one-of-a-kind signet ring featuring a green emerald-cut stone in a yellow gold setting accented by brilliant round diamonds, was an absolute joy. Over the months we spent with Holly and Sammy, it became clear just how perfect they are for one another. Being a small part of their beautiful love story was truly an honour.

Stay tuned as we take you behind the scenes of Sammy and Holly’s dream wedding in paradise, from the unique details of their Bali celebration to the sentimental story behind their rings and the cherished memories that made their big day truly one of a kind.

The Big Day

How did you feel waking up on the morning of your wedding?

"Nervous but really excited!" — Sammy

"Super calm and excited!" — Holly

What was the first thing you did on your wedding day?

"We both woke up and opened an album in bed together full of photos and messages from everyone that Holly’s Maid of Honour made for us".

What was the most emotional moment of the day for each of you?

"Seeing Holly for the first time in her dress & Lukas’s speech" — Sammy

"Hearing Sammy's vows and all of the speeches from our family and friends" — Holly

Was there a moment that took your breath away?

"Seeing Holly walk down the aisle with her Mum & Lukas" — Sammy

"When I was watching from afar and saw our venue & guests then the boys entering the altar" — Holly

An Overseas Wedding

How did you choose your Bali venue?

"I had an amazing wedding planner who was experienced and we told her all of the things we wanted in a venue and she gave us options. We wanted it to be in Uluwatu as that is our favourite place in Bali & where Sammy proposed 15 months prior. We also wanted views of the water but not on sand. Wonderland was the perfect fit for us."

Did any vendor exceed your expectations? How did they make your day special?

"BVL weddings went above and beyond for us all day. We each had an assistant on the day who was by our side, fixing my dress, filling up our drinks and just being there for anything we needed so we didn’t need to leave the moment. The whole team made us feel like celebrities on the day it was incredible."

Is there any advice you would give other couples when planning a Bali wedding?

"Make sure you have an incredible wedding planner, the balinese are amazing and go above and beyond."

The Dress

Tell us about the moment you found the dress. How did you know it was the one?

"When I went shopping for my wedding dress I envisioned myself in a lace dress from day dot. I tried on the dress I chose first and thought wow I love this but it isn’t lace so I better not love it too much I will regret not getting lace as that was my vision. I tried on lace dresses but I wasn’t sold. I went home. It took me a month of looking back over the photos trying to decide. One day it just popped into my head that the dress I chose was the one. I went back to the dress shop tried it on again and fell more in love and purchased it that day."

What was your partner’s reaction when they saw you in your dress for the first time?

"He was surprised but loved it. He was imagining me in lace as I had said that in the past."

The Rings

Can you share the story behind your engagement ring and wedding bands?

"Sammy chose my engagement ring on his own with a little help from my best friends. I had told him in the past what I liked, which was a simple solitaire so it wasn’t too hard for him. I couldn’t decide between a diamond band or a plain cigar band so I decided to just get both! I was having a small wedding in Australia for our registry and a large wedding in Bali so that was an excuse to get 2!

Sammy took a while to decide on what he wanted as he didn’t want a basic gold band. After many visits with Morgan and Laura we together designed a beautiful signet style ring using diamonds out of his grandmothers ring and added a Emerald stone. Emerald is my birth stone so it all fit really well together."

Memorable Moments

What was the most memorable moment of your wedding day?

"Sitting at the bridal table with our bridesmaids & groomsmen listening to all the beautiful speeches. After our speeches we went into a Mother/Son dance. Sammy danced with his Mum and I danced with my son, Lukas."

Did anything unexpected happen that made the day even more memorable?

"We somehow nailed our first dance together looking like we had practised but we hadn’t"

Looking Back

Now that the wedding is over, what’s the one thing you would do all over again?

"The whole thing!"

Is there anything you would change if you could do it over?

"Nope! It was perfect!"

What advice would you give to couples planning their own wedding?

"Have a wedding planner, let them do the stressing so that you can enjoy every moment."

The Honeymoon

Where did you go for your honeymoon?

"Europe"

How did it feel to finally relax and reflect on your wedding day?

"The 5 days after our wedding we stayed in a huge villa with 20 of our friends and it was the best feeling in the world. Relaxing/celebrating with our friends."

The Future

How does it feel to be married? Has anything changed in your relationship?

"It does feel different in a good way, can’t explain the feeling but there is a whole other level of love unlocked."

It Was an Honour

We were honoured to create Holly and Sammy’s stunning rings, including a unique signet ring for Sammy and timeless designs for Holly. Getting to know them and witnessing their love story was such a joy. We’re over the moon for this wonderful couple and wish them a lifetime of happiness together!

With Love,
Laura & Morgan
