The Top Two Questions Men Ask Before Buying an Engagement Ring

Question 1: What Size Engagement Ring Should I Get without spoiling the surprise?

One of the most common and slightly nerve wracking questions we hear from soon-to-be proposers is:

“What size ring should I get for my partner?”

If you're planning a surprise proposal, it's completely normal to feel unsure — especially when you want everything to be perfect. But don't stress! At Morgan & Co Jewellery, we’re here to make the process easy, thoughtful, and totally discreet.

How can I find my girlfriend’s ring size without her knowing?

There are a few clever (and subtle) ways to do this:

1. Borrow a Ring She Already Wears

If she wears a ring on her left ring finger, even better — but most wear on the right hand or middle fingers. Sneak one out  and bring it to us or trace the inner/outer edge on paper. We can usually estimate the size from that.

2. Ask Her Friends or Family

Her best friend, sister, or mum might already know or be able to find out casually. Just make sure they can be trusted to keep the secret.

3. Compare Hands

Hold hands and casually compare finger size. If your pinky is the same size as her ring finger, we can estimate from yours.

4. Use a Ring Sizer While She Sleeps

There are printable ring sizers online, Morgan & Co offers a free plastic ring sizer you can use by gently trying it while she’s asleep. Tricky, but some brave partners have pulled it off!

What’s the average ring size for women?

In Australia, the average women's ring size is around size L to N. If you have no way to guess or check, starting at a size M is often a safe bet.

Here at Morgan & Co Jewellery we have a knack of being able to judge ring size just by looking at a picture of your partner. Not a hundred percent accrue measure but a good starting point.

We always recommend erring slightly larger rather than smaller, it’s easier to size down a ring than to resize it up, especially if there are diamonds on the band.

Plus we want the ring to go on her finger when you get down on your knee and pop the quest.  There is nothing more disappointing when the ring will not go on her finger.

Can an engagement ring be resized?

At Morgan & Co, we design our rings with resizing in mind. We understand that when you’re proposing, you don’t always have the exact size, and that’s okay. After the proposal, we can resize the ring to fit perfectly.

A few notes:

  • Rings with full pavé or intricate side details or long engraving inside the band  may have resizing limits.

  • We offer a complimentary first resize after you propose.

  • It’s best to wait until after the proposal before doing major resizing. Living on the Sunshine Coast we find that our girls fingers will never measure the same in winter and summer. For this reason we suggest that your partner wears the ring for a period of time to gauge how the ring feels in all temperatures.

  • Resizing does not cause any structural damage to the ring. We use laser to meticulously resize so there are no adverse issues.

Question 2: What size diamond should I choose for my partner's engagement ring?

When you're choosing an engagement ring, one of the biggest decisions is:

"What size diamond should I get?"

There’s no one size fits all answer, but there is a right size for your partner, their style, and your budget.

Let’s walk you through what actually matters, and how Morgan & Co helps you get it just right.

1. Carat Size vs Diamond Appearance

The size of a diamond is measured in carats but bigger isn't always better.
Carat is just one part of the equation. A well-cut 0.80ct diamond can look brighter and larger than a poorly cut 1.00ct stone. No one wants a stone that has all the diamond weight in the tail of the stone, we want to see all that beautiful diamond on the top, creating a large spread.

2.  The Most Popular Diamond Size

In Australia, the most commonly chosen sizes for engagement rings are:

  • 0.80ct – 1.00ct: Classic, elegant, and timeless

  • 1.00ct – 1.50ct: Striking and luxurious, without being “too much”

  • 1.50ct- plus: For those who want maximum wow factor (or want to build a statement ring)

But remember a beautiful 0.80ct in the right setting can look amazing. It’s all about proportion, finger size, and design.

3. What Size Will Your Partner Love?

Here’s what to consider when choosing diamond size for your partner:

Style Preferences:

Do they love bold jewellery? Or are they more understated? If they wear fine, dainty pieces, a 1.30ct might feel overwhelming — whereas a 0.80ct oval or pear could feel perfect.

Finger Size:

Smaller fingers often make diamonds appear larger. A 0.80ct on a size J, or smaller, finger can look very substantial.

Setting Style:

Certain settings like halos or fine  bands can make a diamond appear larger without increasing carat weight.

Your Budget:

We work with all budgets  and often recommend slightly smaller carat weights with higher cut quality. You’ll get sparkle, elegance, and value all at once.

Lab-Grown Diamonds: Bigger Size, Smaller Price

If size is a priority and your budget is fixed, lab-grown diamonds are an incredible option. Ethically made and chemically identical to mined diamonds, you can often get a 30 to 50% larger stone for the same price.

We’ll show you both lab and natural options so you can decide what feels right.
