Gentle Cleaning Methods — Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean jewelry after each wear. For deeper cleaning, mix warm water with Morning fresh dishwashing detergent and three squats of windex, leave overnight. Next day gently clean with a soft toothbrush and rinse.  

Avoid Harsh Chemicals — Never use bleach, ammonia, or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage metals and gemstones.

2. Professional Cleaning

Periodically take your heirloom jewellery into Morgan Co Jewellery Buderim  for a professional  ultrasonic or steam cleaning, especially for intricate designs or settings.

3.  Safe Storage

Separate Compartments — Store each piece in its own fabric-lined compartment, pouch or Morgan Co ring box to prevent scratches.

What Are Prongs and Why Are They Vital?

Prongs, also known as claws, are the tiny metal arms that secure gemstones in their settings. They protect the stone from falling out and cushion it against damage. Over time, prongs can wear down, bend, or break due to daily wear, compromising the security of your jewellery.

Claw Re-tipping vs. Claw Replacement

Both techniques serve to reinforce or restore the prongs/claws, but they differ in scope and application:

Prong/claw Re-tipping

Re-tipping involves adding a small amount of new metal to the worn tips of existing prongs. The purpose is to strengthen slightly worn prongs and restore their grip on the gemstone.

Best For — Minor wear, especially when the prong base and structure are still intact.

What is the process of re-tipping my ring?

Our master  jeweller applies a metal alloy (like gold or platinum) to rebuild the tip.

The tip is shaped to fit snugly over the gemstone.

Benefit: It's a less invasive and cost-effective way to extend the life of your jewellery.

Prong/claw Replacement

Replacement involves removing and remaking an entire prong.
The purpose is  necessary when the prong is too worn or damaged to repair.

Gentle Clamping — Jewels are securely held in place using padded clamps or soft grips to prevent scratching or pressure damage.

Cool Techniques — Stones may be removed temporarily if the repair poses a high risk, especially for heirloom pieces with sentimental or monetary value.

Pre-Repair Cleaning — Removing dirt and oils ensures better visibility and precision during the repair process.

Australia has very  strict mining standards that  ensures ethical practices and traceable origins. All our Parti Sapphires are certified by the strictest standards. 

How do I care for a Parti Sapphire?

Sapphires are second only to diamonds in terms of durability. Making both sapphires and parti sapphires a great choice for engagement rings. 

All rings no matter what stones are featured will over time have built up dirt under and around the setting. Soaping the ring in warm water mixed with morning fresh detergent and a few sprays of windex and left over night will dislodge the dirt and oils. Gently using a soft toothbrush brush away any leftover debris. Morgan Co Jewellery offers  lifetime cleaning on all their engagement rings. Which ring did you choose/design for your forever piece, and why?

"I chose a radiant cut cultured diamond with a hidden halo for Bre's forever piece.

I chose this particular style of ring as it offered a modern choice with its unique shape and brilliance, combined with the subtle surprise of the hidden halo, to create an eye-catching yet, elegant design. I also felt like it represented my partners unique style and added a special touch to her forever piece."

Was there anything in particular that drew you to work with us?

"I was referred to Morgan & Co by a close friend who raved about his experience with Morgan and Laura. They helped him plan his proposal, and after consulting with them myself, I realised they're true experts who genuinely care about their clients. Where did you and your partner meet?

"We met at both of our first jobs over six years ago in Toowoomba."

Tell us a little bit about your proposal.

"I knew Rainbow Beach would be the perfect location for my proposal. It holds special memories for Bre as she spent many childhood summers there with her family, given that she grew up not far from there.

I wanted to create a moment that was both romantic and meaningful, so I planned a surprise proposal on the stunning sand dunes overlooking Fraser Island. The sand dunes at Rainbow Beach are usually bustling with tourists and locals, but on that particular afternoon, it felt like we had the entire place to ourselves. It was the perfect setting for a private and intimate proposal. The weather even cooperated, with the rain clearing up just as we arrived at our spot.

After the proposal, we celebrated with her and I's closest family members who were nearby, making the experience even more special."

What was your favourite part of your Morgan & Co experience?

"Meeting Morgan and Laura in person at their beautiful boutique office in Buderim was a fantastic experience.

I brought along some close family members who were in on the surprise, and we all instantly connected with them.

When it comes to diamonds, there’s a lot of fascination—and confusion—around blue fluorescence. Is it good? Is it bad? Does it make your diamond look dull, milky, or better than non-fluorescent stones? These are questions I get asked often during consultations, so let’s unravel the mystery of blue fluorescence in diamonds together.

What Is Blue Fluorescence in a Diamond?

Blue fluorescence is a natural characteristic found in some diamonds. When exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light—like sunlight or a blacklight—these diamonds emit a soft blue glow. The effect ranges from faint to very strong, depending on the stone. While this may sound unusual, fluorescence is actually quite common, with around 30% of diamonds exhibiting some level of it.

But what does this mean for the appearance of your diamond? That’s where things get interesting—and where misconceptions often take over.

Blue Fluorescence Diamonds Are Bad, Right?

Well, as co-Owner of Morgan & Co owner, Laura Penkalla, aptly puts it: “It depends.”

The debate around blue fluorescence in diamonds seems never-ending. Much of the confusion comes from misinformation, outdated ideas, and a lack of understanding about what actually causes certain visual effects. In actual fact, when chosen carefully, diamonds with blue fluorescence can actually look better than non-fluorescent stones.

What Causes a Diamond to Look Blue in Sunlight?

The appearance of blue in a diamond isn’t always fluorescence at play. Often, it’s simply a reflection of the blue sky. Diamonds are expert light performers, so they reflect and refract colours from their surroundings, including the sky above.

Fluorescence only affects the diamond under UV light, and when paired with certain inclusions, it can sometimes create a milky or cloudy effect. However, this isn’t true for all fluorescent diamonds. Experts, like our diamond sources at Morgan & Co, perform rigorous tests to ensure the if a diamond is chosen which has fluorescence that it enhances their beauty, not detracts from it.

Debunking Misconceptions About Fluorescence

1. “Fluorescent Diamonds Look Dull”
   Not necessarily! The level of fluorescence in a diamond doesn’t automatically make it dull. For example, a diamond with strong blue fluorescence can appear brighter and whiter in shaded daylight, especially if it’s masking a slight yellow tint. 

2. “Fluorescent Diamonds Are Milky”
   While some fluorescent diamonds can appear milky, this effect is often due to certain types of inclusions that interact with the UV light. Skilled diamond sources reject these stones. A well-selected fluorescent diamond will appear just as clear and brilliant as a non-fluorescent one, indoors and outdoors.

How Fluorescence Can Enhance a Diamond

Here’s the surprising part: blue fluorescence can actually improve the appearance of certain diamonds. Strong blue fluorescence often counteracts yellow undertones in diamonds graded G or lower, making them look whiter in daylight.

For example, a G-colour diamond with blue fluorescence might look closer to a D-colour diamond—saving you money while still achieving a stunning look. This often comes into play when we are choosing a natural diamond and need to stick to a client's budget. 

Natural Diamonds vs. Lab-Grown Diamonds: Fluorescence and Pricing

When purchasing a natural diamond, you may find yourself having to compromise on certain factors, such as size, quality, or the presence of fluorescence, to stay within your budget. However, lab-grown diamonds—thanks to their lower price point—offer more flexibility. You can prioritise higher quality, including better color and cut grades, without sacrificing affordability.

That said, fluorescence isn’t a “flaw” to avoid. Instead, it’s one of many factors to consider when choosing the right diamond for your budget and preferences.

The Final Word on Blue Fluorescence

Blue fluorescence in a diamond isn’t inherently good or bad — it’s all about context. When carefully selected, a fluorescent diamond can be as breathtaking as any non-fluorescent stone, sometimes even more so.
