Understanding Diamond Engagement Ring Shapes

Understanding Diamond Engagement Ring Shapes

When it comes to choosing a diamond engagement ring, the diamond cut is so much more than just its shape — it’s the essence of the diamond’s personality. As a jewellery designer and custom jeweller, I’ve guided countless clients through this choice, and it’s always a magical moment when someone finds the perfect cut that resonates with them. Each diamond shape tells its own story and influences the overall brilliance, style, and feel of a ring.

Let me take you through the most popular diamond shapes and what makes them shine, so you can decide which one fits your diamond ring and love story best.

Round Brilliant Cut

The round brilliant is like the classic love song of diamond cuts — timeless, elegant, and universally adored. With its 58 facets, this cut is designed for maximum sparkle. It reflects light beautifully and suits any ring style, whether it’s a simple solitaire or a dazzling halo design. If you’re after timeless sophistication with unmatched brilliance, this is the cut for your custom engagement ring.

Princess Cut

The princess cut is a little edgy and modern, yet it doesn’t lose its feminine charm. With its square shape and pointed corners, it has a clean, contemporary look while still delivering incredible brilliance. It’s bold and dynamic, perfect for those who love a mix of elegance and modernity.

Emerald Cut

The emerald cut is all about sophistication. Its rectangular shape with step-cut facets emphasises clarity over sparkle, giving it that “hall of mirrors” effect. It’s understated yet striking, a choice for someone who values clean lines and vintage glamour. This cut whispers elegance rather than shouting sparkle.

Oval Cut

Think of the oval cut as the round brilliant’s trendy cousin. It offers a similar sparkle but with an elongated shape that creates the illusion of longer fingers. It’s perfect for those who want something classic with a hint of modern flair.

Cushion Cut

The cushion cut, with its soft, rounded corners, has a romantic and vintage feel. It’s versatile and works well in various settings, from solitaires to intricate vintage-inspired designs. It’s a favourite for those who love a blend of old-world charm and modern brilliance.

Pear Cut

The pear cut is unique, artistic, and undeniably elegant. Shaped like a teardrop, it’s perfect for those who want a statement piece with a touch of sophistication. Its elongated shape also has the added benefit of making fingers appear slimmer and longer.

Marquise Cut

The marquise cut has a dramatic flair with its elongated, pointed ends. Its unique shape maximises carat weight, making the diamond appear larger. This cut has a regal vibe, ideal for someone looking for a bold and striking design.

Radiant Cut

If you love the sparkle of a round diamond but want something with a bit more edge, the radiant cut is a brilliant choice. It combines the clean lines of a square or rectangular shape with the faceting of a round brilliant, giving it an energetic and lively appearance.

Asscher Cut

Vintage lovers adore the Asscher cut. With its square shape and step-cut facets, it’s similar to the emerald cut but with a bolder, more symmetrical design. It’s elegant and intricate, perfect for someone who appreciates old-world charm.

Heart Cut

The heart cut is the ultimate symbol of romance. It’s a whimsical and meaningful choice, but it requires expert craftsmanship to get the shape just right. For someone who wants their ring to represent love in its purest form, this is the one.

Choosing the Perfect Cut

Each cut has its own personality, and the one you choose should reflect yours. If brilliance and sparkle are your top priorities, go for a round, oval, or cushion cut. For elegance and timelessness, emerald or Asscher cuts are perfect. If you want something truly unique, the pear, marquise, or heart shapes are standout choices.

Elongated cuts like oval, pear, and marquise not only add an elegant touch but can also make fingers look longer and slimmer. It’s all about finding the shape that speaks to your style and feels just right.

Forever Begins Now: Selena Gomez’s Stunning Marquise Engagement Ring

Forever Begins Now: Selena Gomez’s Stunning Marquise Engagement Ring

Love is in the air, and it’s shimmering brighter than ever for Selena Gomez. Recently, she said “yes” to Benny Blanco, marking the beginning of their forever story. As one of the most beloved stars in the world, Selena’s engagement was bound to make waves, but it’s her dazzling engagement ring that has everyone talking.

Selena’s ring is a masterpiece of elegance and sophistication. At its heart lies a breathtaking marquise-cut diamond, estimated to be between 5ct and 7 carats. This exceptional gem is set in a classic five-claw setting, nestled atop a glittering diamond band. The pave band is set with stunning brilliant round diamonds to complement the centre stone. The design exudes timeless beauty, and it’s clear that every detail was carefully considered to reflect her style and the couple’s unique bond.

The Marquise Cut: A Diamond with History and Flair

The marquise cut has a history as captivating as its design. Dating back to 18th-century France, it’s said that King Louis XV commissioned a diamond to be cut in the shape of his mistress Madame de Pompadour’s lips. This romantic origin story adds a layer of charm to what is already one of the most elegant diamond cuts.

What makes the marquise cut stand out is its elongated shape with pointed ends, which creates a striking and sophisticated look. Its design maximizes the diamond’s surface area, making it appear larger than other cuts of the same carat weight—a feature that adds to its allure. The marquise is a shape that symbolizes ambition and elegance, making it a fitting choice for Selena.

Versatile Settings for a Marquise Diamond

One of the beauties of the marquise cut is its versatility in design. While Selena’s five-claw setting offers timeless security and elegance, the marquise can shine in various settings. A classic solitaire setting places the diamond at the forefront, while a halo design adds extra sparkle by surrounding the centre stone with smaller diamonds. For those seeking a modern twist, an east-west setting—where the diamond is oriented horizontally—creates a chic and contemporary look.

In Selena’s case, the diamond band perfectly complements the centre stone, adding brilliance without overshadowing the striking shape of the marquise.

What to Consider When Sourcing a Marquise Diamond

Sourcing a marquise diamond requires special attention to detail to ensure its beauty and quality. One key aspect is symmetry, as the elongated shape and pointed ends need to be perfectly balanced for the diamond to look its best. The “bow-tie effect,” a shadowy area across the centre of the diamond, is another consideration. While a slight bow-tie is natural in most marquise diamonds, minimising its visibility ensures maximum brilliance.

Proportions are equally important. The length-to-width ratio determines the diamond’s overall look—some may prefer a wider marquise for a softer appearance, while others might choose a slimmer shape for a more dramatic effect. Finally, color and clarity are crucial, especially since the marquise’s elongated shape can make inclusions and color more noticeable than in round or cushion cuts.

At Morgan & Co., we specialize in helping clients source the perfect marquise diamond. Our approach focuses on finding a gem that matches your vision, ensuring exceptional quality while guiding you through every detail of the process.

Selena Gomez’s engagement ring is a testament to the enduring beauty of the marquise cut, but what makes any ring truly special is how it reflects the story of the couple. At Morgan & Co., we take pride in creating bespoke engagement rings that are as unique as the love they symbolise.

From selecting the perfect marquise diamond to choosing the setting and band, we work closely with you to bring your dream ring to life. Whether you’re drawn to the timeless elegance of Selena’s design or want to create something entirely your own, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

How to Find Your Perfect Diamond Engagement Ring

How to Find Your Perfect Diamond Engagement Ring

At Morgan & Co, helping couples create their dream diamond engagement ring is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do. There’s something magical about crafting a piece that symbolises love, commitment, and a lifetime of shared memories. Whether you're newly engaged or planning the perfect proposal, understanding the styles, settings, and cuts is the first step toward finding the ring.

Discovering the Perfect Style

Choosing the right diamond engagement ring starts with understanding the style that best suits you or your partner. From classic solitaires to intricate vintage designs, there’s a ring for every taste —

  • Classic Solitaires: Timeless and elegant, this style places the diamond centre stage.
  • Halo Settings: Surrounding the centre diamond with smaller stones creates extra sparkle and makes the centre stone appear larger.
  • Three-Stone Rings: Symbolising your past, present, and future, this style offers meaningful beauty.
  • Modern and Minimalist Designs: Sleek and understated, these rings are perfect for contemporary couples.
  • Vintage-Inspired Rings: With ornate details and intricate designs, these rings capture the charm of bygone eras.

Exploring Settings for Your Diamond Engagement Ring

The setting not only enhances the diamond’s beauty but also reflects the wearer’s lifestyle and preferences —

  • Prong Setting: Classic and versatile, prongs hold the diamond securely while allowing light to maximise its brilliance.
  • Bezel Setting: A modern option that encases the diamond in a protective metal rim—ideal for active lifestyles.
  • Pavé Setting: Tiny diamonds set along the band add an extra touch of sparkle.
  • Cathedral Setting: With elegant arches, this design elevates the diamond and adds a touch of drama.
  • Tension Setting: The diamond appears to float between the band, a modern and striking option.

Choosing the Right Diamond Cut

The diamond cut is arguably the most important factor in determining a ring’s brilliance and sparkle. At Morgan & Co, we guide our clients through each cut to find the one that best suits their style —

  • Round Brilliant: The most popular and sparkly choice, perfect for classic designs.
  • Oval: A modern twist on the round cut, offering a flattering elongated shape.
  • Cushion: A vintage-inspired cut with soft, rounded corners and a timeless feel.
  • Marquise: Eye-catching and unique, this cut maximises carat weight with its elongated shape.
  • Radiant: A combination of brilliance and clean lines, ideal for those who love sparkle.

In late 2024 and as we enter 2025 we are seeing the most popular engagement ring cut and style is emerald and radiant. The rectangle shapes of these cuts elongates the finger and gives a lovely spread of diamond over the finger. Oval cut diamonds are still incredibly popular and we are seeing a lot of more chunky bands and settings as we role into 2025 for engagement ring trends.

The Importance of Diamond Education

Investing in a diamond engagement ring isn’t just about selecting the most beautiful option—it’s about making an informed decision. At Morgan & Co, we believe in empowering our clients with knowledge about the 4Cs —

  1. Cut: Impacts the diamond’s sparkle and brilliance.
  2. Colour: The less colour, the rarer the diamond.
  3. Clarity: A measure of internal inclusions and external blemishes.
  4. Carat: Refers to the diamond’s weight and size.

We exclusively offer certified, ethically sourced diamonds, including natural and lab-grown options. This ensures you know exactly what you’re purchasing, giving you peace of mind and confidence in your choice. Before we source your forever diamond, our team at Morgan & Co will expertly guide you through diamond education so you are fully informed about what you are spending your money on.

Emma & Richard’s Love Story: Morgan & Co Featured in Wed Vibes

Our Clients Emma and Richard: A Beautiful Wedding Story

I’m thrilled to share that our client's, Emma & Richard, who were recently featured in a stunning blog about their magical wedding day. Being part of their love story and seeing their day unfold so beautifully was truly an honour for us at Morgan & Co.

Emma and Richard’s wedding was a perfect blend of elegance, intimacy, and heartfelt details that reflected who they are as a couple. From thrifted silver candlesticks to a vintage-inspired oyster station, every element of their day was thoughtfully curated to tell their unique story. Their wedding was as timeless as the love they share, and thanks to Joel and Courtney Films, it was all captured in a way that will let them relive those cherished moments for years to come.

A Journey to Forever

Emma and Richard’s story is one of resilience and deep connection. After meeting as teenagers, they maintained a decade-long friendship across continents before finding their way back to each other. Richard’s proposal, a heartfelt blend of everyday simplicity and romantic sentiment, perfectly captured the essence of their relationship.

Hearing about their engagement was so special for us, and helping them design a custom engagement ring and wedding bands on the Sunshine Coast that symbolises their love was an experience we’ll always treasure.

Thoughtful Details, Timeless Style

Emma’s bridal look was a work of art, combining modern elegance with personal touches like her grandmother’s engagement ring, a vintage brooch, and a rosary gifted by her grandfather. These meaningful details were complemented by her gown from Chosen By Kyha and her handcrafted earrings made during a jewellery class with her bridesmaids.

Richard, too, brought sentimentality into his look, wearing family heirlooms like his grandmother’s watch and a diamond pin from his grandfather. Seeing how much care they both put into their wedding details was truly inspiring.

Capturing Every Moment

Their intimate ceremony on Maleny Manor’s helipad, surrounded by breathtaking winter views, was followed by a relaxed garden party filled with cocktails, lawn games, and golden-hour laughter. Watching Emma and Richard sneak away for quiet moments with their film camera was a reminder of how important it is to pause and soak in the day.

As jewellers, we love hearing these stories. It reminds us that the pieces we create aren’t just jewellery—they’re part of moments that will be cherished forever and stories to pass down to generations.

A Love Story Worth Sharing

Emma and Richard’s day wasn’t just about their love for each other; it was also about celebrating their shared history, families, and friends. From heartfelt speeches to their final dance under the stars, their wedding was filled with moments that were uniquely theirs.

Being featured in this blog is such a privilege because it allows us to reflect on why we do what we do. Helping couples like Emma and Richard create meaningful jewellery is at the heart of Morgan & Co, and seeing their love stories unfold is the ultimate reward.

If you’re planning your own love story, we’d be honoured to help craft a piece that tells it beautifully. Reach out to us for a tailored consultation, and let’s create something truly special together.

With Love,
Morgan xo

6 Heartfelt Anniversary Gift Ideas Sunshine Coast

6 Heartfelt Anniversary Gift Ideas Sunshine Coast

An anniversary isn’t just another date—it’s a heartfelt celebration of your shared journey, growth, and love. While engagement rings signify the beginning of forever, anniversary gifts are an opportunity to honour the milestones you’ve reached together.

At Morgan & Co, we believe every anniversary deserves a gift as unique and meaningful as your love story. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with couples to create stunning pieces that go far beyond traditional gifts. Here are six of my favourite ideas to inspire your next celebration.

1. Eternity Rings: A Symbol of Everlasting Love

Eternity rings are a true classic, with diamonds or gemstones encircling the band as a symbol of unending devotion and to celebrate your anniversary. Whether you opt for a full eternity or a half design, these rings are a stunning complement to engagement and wedding bands.

What makes them special? We often personalise eternity rings with anniversary-specific gemstones or birthstones, making them as unique as the love they celebrate. View our wedding band/eternity band collection and our stacker collection for some gift inspiration. Remember we can customise any piece to make it your own and more personalised for your loved one. Each piece can be made in yellow, white or rose gold or platinum and natural, lab grown or any coloured gemstones can be set in your eternity ring.

2. Custom Pendants: A Personal Touch

There’s something so special about creating a custom pendant that reflects your shared story. Whether it’s engraved with meaningful dates, coordinates, or a special symbol, this piece becomes a daily reminder of your bond.

One of my favourite projects was a locket that hid a beautiful photo and a heartfelt message—something that will be treasured forever. Another recent custom pendant we created was a petite love heart on a yellow gold chain with a small diamond in the corner.

3. Diamond Stud Earrings: Timeless and Elegant

Diamond studs are the ultimate gift for understated sophistication. Their simplicity means they can be worn every day, yet they radiate elegance for special occasions.

For a modern twist, consider adding coloured diamonds or unique shapes like pears or emerald cuts. These subtle details can make an already timeless gift even more special. View our full earrings collection here

4. Bracelets: The Perfect Blend of Grace and Style

Whether it’s a sleek bangle or a dazzling tennis bracelet, bracelets carry a symbolism of unity and strength. I often recommend charm bracelets to clients celebrating ongoing milestones—they’re a beautiful way to tell your story over time.

Customisation, like adding engraved messages or meaningful gemstones, ensures every piece is deeply personal.

5. Custom Birthstone Jewellery: A Celebration of Life’s Moments

Birthstones are a vibrant way to commemorate key dates and family members. A client recently came to us wanting stackable rings with the birthstones of their children—a perfect blend of beauty and meaning.

From multi-stone necklaces to bracelets with birthstone charms, there’s endless room to create a piece that feels truly personal.

6. Men’s Jewellery: Celebrating His Achievements

Anniversaries are about celebrating both partners, and men’s jewellery offers a sophisticated way to honour him. Custom signet rings, sleek bracelets, or cufflinks with personal engravings are all modern, stylish options.

I’ve found that these pieces often surprise and delight—there’s something special about giving a meaningful gift he might not expect. We also offer complementary engraving — a perfect way to add a sentimental touch to your anniversary gift.

5 Tips on Caring For Heirloom Jewellery

5 Tips on Caring For Heirloom Jewellery

Caring for heirloom jewellery is essential to preserving its beauty and sentimental value for generations. Here's how you can ensure your treasured pieces remain in excellent condition.

1. Home  Cleaning

Gentle Cleaning Methods — Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean jewelry after each wear. For deeper cleaning, mix warm water with Morning fresh dishwashing detergent and three squats of windex, leave overnight. Next day gently clean with a soft toothbrush and rinse.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals — Never use bleach, ammonia, or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage metals and gemstones.

2. Professional Cleaning

Periodically take your heirloom jewellery into Morgan Co Jewellery Buderim  for a professional  ultrasonic or steam cleaning, especially for intricate designs or settings.

3.  Safe Storage

Separate Compartments — Store each piece in its own fabric-lined compartment, pouch or Morgan Co ring box to prevent scratches.

Avoid Humidity — Use anti-tarnish strips or a silica gel packet in storage to absorb moisture and reduce tarnish.

Secure Lockets and Clasps — Ensure all clasps, hinges, and prongs are secure before storing and never place more than one chain in a pouch to prevent tangles.

4. Regular Maintenance

Inspect Settings — Check prongs, clasps, and settings for signs of wear or looseness. Loose stones should be addressed immediately by Morgan Co Jewellery Buderim.

4. Limit Exposure

Avoid Chemicals — Remove jewellery before using cosmetics, perfumes, hairspray, or cleaning products.

Minimise Physical Strain — Don’t wear delicate pieces during rigorous activities like gardening, exercising, or swimming, as this can cause damage.

5. Document Its History

Create a Record — Keep a written or digital record of the jewelry’s history, including who owned it, special occasions associated with it, and any appraisals or certifications.

Appraise and Insure — Morgan Co Jewellery Buderim can facilitate an independent evaluation with a registered gemologist.  We recommend Q report jewellery Insurance to ensure your jewellery.

At Morgan Co Jewellery, Buderim, we are experts on heirloom and pre-loved jewellery. Constant monitoring of the condition of heirloom jewellery is essential for preserving its integrity. Here’s how you can stay proactive in identifying and addressing potential damage.

Tips on Addressing Potential Damage

Inspect Regularly

— Gemstone Settings: Check for loose  stones. Gently wiggle them with a toothpick to ensure they’re secure.

— Prongs and Bezels: Examine for bent, worn, or broken prongs that might fail to hold stones in place.

    Act Early

    — Don’t Wait for a Break: Address minor issues, like slightly loose stones or thinning metal, as soon as you notice them. Early intervention can prevent more extensive and costly repairs.

    — Schedule Maintenance: Make regular visits to Morgan Co Jewellery Buderim for professional inspections, especially for pieces you wear often.

      Recognise Wear and Tear

      — Metal Fatigue: Older metals can become brittle over time, especially in settings or clasps that experience frequent stress.

      — Fine Details: Intricate engraving or filigree might show signs of wear. Morgan Co jewellery can often restore these delicate features.

        Trust the Experts

Morgan Co Jewellery: We are  experienced in heirloom and antique pieces and know how to  inspect and repair such pieces. We  understand the nuances of older craftsmanship and materials, especially old cut diamonds.

Preventive Reinforcements: Morgan Co Jewellery, Buderim are experts in re-tipping and  reinforcing prongs.

          Prong replacement and re-tipping

The most common repair and replacement we see when our clients present us with their treasured heirloom rings are the claws/prongs that hold the precious stones in the setting.

Morgan & Co Jewellery, Buderim, are experts in prong replacement and re-tipping. Here's everything you need to know about these techniques and their importance:

What Are Prongs and Why Are They Vital?

Prongs, also known as claws, are the tiny metal arms that secure gemstones in their settings. They protect the stone from falling out and cushion it against damage. Over time, prongs can wear down, bend, or break due to daily wear, compromising the security of your jewellery.

          Claw Re-tipping vs. Claw Replacement

Both techniques serve to reinforce or restore the prongs/claws, but they differ in scope and application:

          Prong/claw Re-tipping

Re-tipping involves adding a small amount of new metal to the worn tips of existing prongs. The purpose is to strengthen slightly worn prongs and restore their grip on the gemstone.

Best For — Minor wear, especially when the prong base and structure are still intact.

What is the process of re-tipping my ring?

Our master  jeweller applies a metal alloy (like gold or platinum) to rebuild the tip.

The tip is shaped to fit snugly over the gemstone.

Benefit: It's a less invasive and cost-effective way to extend the life of your jewellery.

          Prong/claw Replacement

Replacement involves removing and remaking an entire prong.
The purpose is  necessary when the prong is too worn or damaged to repair.
This technique is perfect for severely worn, broken, or bent prongs that compromise the security of the stone.

Process — The damaged prong is carefully removed. A new prong is crafted from a matching metal and soldered into place. The prong is shaped and polished for a seamless appearance.

Benefit: Ensures long-term stability and safety for your gemstones.

What happens to the gem stones when re-tipping or replacement is needed?

Preserving the integrity of gemstones during prong replacement or re-tipping is critical to maintaining the value and beauty of your jewellery. Here’s a closer look at the considerations and precautions that skilled jewellers employ to ensure the gemstone’s radiance remains intact.

            Gemstone Sensitivity

Each gemstone has unique properties, such as hardness, heat resistance, and susceptibility to chemicals. These factors dictate how the stone should be handled during repairs:

Heat-Sensitive Gems — Stones like opals, pearls, turquoise, and emeralds can crack, discolour, or lose their lustre under high temperatures.

Durable Gems — Diamonds, sapphires, and rubies are more heat-resistant but still require careful handling to avoid surface damage or inclusions.

Fragile Gems — Stones with cleavage planes, such as tanzanite and topaz, can fracture under pressure or mishandling.

            Techniques to Protect Gemstones

Our Master Jeweller uses specialised methods to safeguard your gemstones during prong work:

            Heat Protection

Heat Shields — We often use insulating materials, such as jeweler’s clay or heat-resistant gels, to shield the stone from heat during soldering.

Laser Soldering — For heat-sensitive pieces, we may use lasers instead of traditional torches. This method focuses heat precisely on the metal without affecting the gemstone.

            Physical Protection

Protective Covers — Delicate gemstones may be covered with tape or a thin layer of wax for added safety.

Gentle Clamping — Jewels are securely held in place using padded clamps or soft grips to prevent scratching or pressure damage.

Cool Techniques — Stones may be removed temporarily if the repair poses a high risk, especially for heirloom pieces with sentimental or monetary value.

            Cleaning Before and After Repairs

Proper cleaning is essential both before and after the repair:

Pre-Repair Cleaning — Removing dirt and oils ensures better visibility and precision during the repair process.

Post-Repair Cleaning — After the repair, our Master jeweller will carefully polish the piece, using non-abrasive methods suited to the gemstone's properties.

             Regular Inspections Post-Repair

Once the repair is complete, a final inspection ensures that:

            — The gemstone remains securely set.
            — There is no residue or tarnish from the repair process.
            — The brilliance and structure of the stone are intact.

By respecting the delicate nature of gemstones and employing advanced repair techniques, Morgan & Co  not only will restore your jewellery’s functionality but also protect the brilliance that makes it truly timeless.

Tis the Season of Giving: 6 Trending Engagement Ring Designs for This Summer

Summer in Australia isn’t just about warm beaches and festive cheer—it’s also a magical season for engagements. With the holidays in full swing, it’s the perfect time to give the ultimate gift: a symbol of love and commitment. Whether you're planning a romantic beach proposal or a cozy moment under twinkling lights, the right ring will make the moment unforgettable.

Here are the top engagement ring trends this summer, combining timeless elegance with modern flair:

            1. Oval-Cut Diamonds: The Classic

Oval-shaped diamonds are in high demand. Their elongated shape flatters the hand and enhances sparkle, especially when paired with a sleek yellow gold band. View The Harriet Ring which features a stunning oval cut diamond set in yellow gold with sweeping shoulders. The Ella Ring is a classic design featuring a lab grown oval diamond set in a floating band with enough room for any wedding band to sit flush.

Why it’s perfect for summer — The shape captures sunlight beautifully, making it ideal for outdoor proposals.

            2. Toi et Moi Rings: A Symbol of Two Souls

This French-inspired design showcases two gemstones side by side, symbolising two lives united. Opt for diamonds or mix it up with a coloured gemstone for a personalised touch. The Kiara Ring is a stunning and unique Toi Et Moi design which featured a curved band for a modern take.

Why it’s perfect for summer — Its distinctive design stands out at festive gatherings.

            3. Solitaire with a Twist

Classic solitaire rings are reimagined with twisted bands or hidden halos, offering a subtle yet contemporary twist while keeping the centre stone in focus. The Hayley Ring is a perfect example of making a solitaire ring your own, this ring features a pear cut diamond with a twisted diamond yellow gold band.

Why it’s perfect for summer — Its versatility makes it a match for every summer occasion, from casual beachwear to elegant evening attire.

            4. Emerald-Cut Elegance

Known for its clean lines and step-cut facets, the emerald cut exudes timeless sophistication. Set it in white gold or platinum for a crisp, modern look. There are so many ways to set an emerald cut to make it unique, for instance, why not opt for this more masculine design which features a lab grown emerald cut diamond in a bezel setting. For a more classic take on an emerald cut diamond, you will adore The Heidi Ring - set in four claws on a yellow gold band with plenty of room for your future wedding band to fit perfectly flush. For a more modern approach why not turn your emerald cut diamond on its side and go for a half bezel setting, like The Goldie Ring. This is one of my all time favourites for 2024 and 2025!

Why it’s perfect for summer — The sleek design feels cool and refreshing, balancing the season's warmth.

            5. Nature-Inspired Designs

Floral patterns, vine-like bands, and organic motifs are trending for their romantic, whimsical charm. These rings often include delicate milgrain details or small accent stones. The Theresa Ring is our nature inspired ring that we absolutely love, she is set in yellow gold with mailgrain detailing and set with a Parti sapphire - Natural Australian Green Sapphire.

            6. Coloured Gemstones for a Pop of Personality

Moissanite vs. Diamonds & Our 5 Key Takeaways

Moissanite vs. Diamonds & Our 5 Key Takeaways

When choosing the perfect engagement ring or fine jewellery piece, many clients encounter moissanite as a potential alternative to diamonds. While both stones may look similar at first glance, their differences in origin, brilliance, and value are significant. Let’s dive deeper into what sets moissanite apart from diamonds and why one might suit you better than the other.

            What is Moissanite?

Moissanite, originally discovered by chemist Henri Moissan in 1893, was found in a meteorite crater and initially mistaken for diamond. However, this rare mineral turned out to be silicon carbide. Today, nearly all moissanite is lab-grown, making it an affordable and sustainable alternative to diamonds.

            Moissanite vs. Diamonds: Key Differences

            Brilliance and Sparkle

Moissanite’s higher refractive index (2.65) compared to diamond’s (2.42) gives it a fiery brilliance with rainbow-like flashes under sunlight. While diamonds are known for their bright, understated sparkle, moissanite can appear more like a “disco ball” in direct light.

            Hardness and Durability

Diamonds, scoring a perfect 10 on the Mohs scale, are the hardest natural material, making them exceptionally resistant to scratches and wear. Moissanite, while slightly softer at 9.25, is still highly durable and well-suited for daily wear.

            Colour and Clarity

Diamonds range from colourless (D grade) to visibly tinted (Z grade). Moissanite, though near-colorless, often has a slight warmth, particularly in larger stones. While natural diamonds may feature inclusions, moissanite’s lab-grown origins make it almost flawless in clarity.

            Price and Value

Moissanite is significantly more affordable, often costing 80–90% less than a comparable natural diamond. For those on a budget, this allows for a larger stone without a hefty price tag. However, diamonds—particularly natural ones—hold their value better over time due to their prestige and rarity. In compared with lab grown diamonds, moissanites aren't THAT far different in price, which when a client is tossing up between the two, we would often encourage a lab grown diamond.

            Sustainability and Ethics

Moissanite, being entirely lab-grown, is a sustainable and ethical choice, free from the environmental and social concerns associated with diamond mining. Diamonds, whether mined or lab-grown, vary in their ethical impact depending on their sourcing. At Morgan & Co, we source only ethically sourced diamonds, both natural and labs, so this isn't an issue when it comes to sourcing a diamond with us.

Which Stone is Right for You?

The choice between moissanite and diamond comes down to personal values and preferences:

            • Sparkle: If you love fiery, rainbow-like brilliance, moissanite is for you. For a more refined, white sparkle, lab grown diamonds are unmatched.
            • Budget: Moissanite is perfect for those seeking an affordable alternative with a diamond-like appearance.
            • Durability: Both are strong enough for everyday wear, but diamonds lead in overall hardness and longevity.
            • Ethics: Moissanite’s lab-grown origins appeal to those who prioritise eco-conscious and ethical sourcing. Although, when sourcing through Morgan & Co there is no compromise when it comes to ethically sourced diamonds.

At Morgan & Co: The Choice is Yours

At Morgan & Co, we believe in empowering clients to make the best choice for their needs and values. Whether you’re drawn to the timeless elegance of natural diamonds, the innovative appeal of lab-grown diamonds, or the vibrant colours of gemstones like sapphires, we can source the perfect stone for you.

In recent years, many of our clients have opted for lab-grown diamonds due to their affordability and ethical benefits. Others have fallen in love with the beauty and individuality of coloured gemstones or the prestige of natural diamonds. Whatever your vision, our team is here to guide you through the process and craft a piece that’s uniquely yours.

            In Summary

While moissanite offers affordability and sustainability, diamonds stand apart for their timeless beauty, durability, and legacy. At Morgan & Co, we’re dedicated to helping you find a gemstone that fits your story, budget, and style—ensuring that your dream piece is truly unforgettable.

Let’s design your forever ring together.

5 Key Takeaways from the Blog

            1. Moissanite Offers More Colourful Brilliance
Moissanite has a fiery, rainbow-like sparkle due to its higher refractive index, while diamonds offer a classic white brilliance with understated sparkle.

            2. Durability Differences
Diamonds, scoring a 10 on the Mohs scale, are the hardest natural material, while moissanite (9.25) is slightly softer but still highly durable for daily wear.

            3. Price Comparison
Moissanite is up to 90% more affordable than natural diamonds, making it a cost-effective choice for those on a budget without sacrificing brilliance, howvever there isn't a huge difference in price between mossanites and lab grown diamonds.

            4. Clarity and Color Consistency
Moissanite, being lab-grown, is consistently clear and near-colourless, while diamonds are naturally graded for colour and clarity, adding uniqueness to each stone.

            5. Personalised Choices at Morgan & Co
Morgan & Co can source natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds, or colored gemstones, offering personalized options to fit your style, values, and budget.

Thank you for reading! We hope we have cleared up for you the difference between a moissanite and lab grown diamond. We look forward to seeing you for your engagement ring or fine jewellery consultation

Australian Sapphire and Parti Sapphire Engagement Rings: A Unique and Ethical Choice

Australian Sapphire and Parti Sapphire Engagement Rings: A Unique and Ethical Choice

Engagement rings are timeless symbols of love and commitment, and as preferences evolve, many couples are gravitating towards distinctive and ethically sourced gemstones. Australian sapphires and in particular Parti Sapphires have emerged as a stunning choice, celebrated for their vibrant hues, exceptional quality, and sustainable origins. Here’s why these gemstones are capturing hearts worldwide.

            A Rich Palette of Colours

Australian sapphires are renowned for their remarkable range of colours, making them an excellent choice for those seeking something beyond the traditional.

Classic Blue — The deep, velvety blues of Australian sapphires rival the finest gems globally.

Rare Varieties — Unique hues like teal, green, and the coveted pink-orange Padparadscha sapphire offer a fresh, contemporary appeal.

Colour Play — Their natural pleochroism creates dynamic color shifts, displaying varying shades from different angles, adding depth and intrigue.

            Ethical and Sustainable Sourcing

As awareness grows about the impact of gemstone mining, Australian sapphires and parti sapphires stand out for their ethical sourcing practices:

Responsible Mining — Australia is known for adhering to strict environmental and ethical standards, ensuring minimal harm to ecosystems and fair treatment of workers.

Traceability — Many Australian sapphires and parti sapphires come with documentation of their origins, giving our client's peace of mind.

            Exceptional Quality

Australian sapphires and parti sapphires are prized for their durability and brilliance.

Hardness — With a rating of 9 on the Mohs scale, they’re ideal for everyday wear, second only to diamonds in toughness.

Natural Inclusions — Unlike lab-grown stones, the subtle inclusions in natural sapphires add authenticity and character, making each gem one-of-a-kind.

            Versatile and Unique Designs

The versatility of Australian sapphires ensures they shine in a variety of settings:

Classic Solitaire — Perfect for showcasing the rich colour and brilliance of a single sapphire.

Halo Settings — Surrounding sapphires with diamonds accentuates their vibrancy and sparkle.

Three-Stone Rings — Pairing sapphires with complementary gems like diamonds or aquamarines creates a balanced and symbolic design.

The Allure of a Personal Touch

Australian sapphires are ideal for bespoke engagement rings:

Custom Creations — Work with a jeweller to design a ring that reflects your love story and personal style.

Symbolism — Choose a colour that holds special meaning, such as blue for loyalty or green for growth and harmony.

What Sets Parti Sapphires Apart from Traditional Sapphires?

Parti sapphires are a rare and mesmerising variety of sapphire, celebrated for their colour zoning—a natural phenomenon that creates distinct areas of different colours within a single gemstone. Unlike traditional sapphires, which typically display a uniform or blended colour, parti sapphires offer a unique visual experience that makes them highly sought after. Morgan & Co are experts in sourcing the perfect parti sapphires for our clients and Parti sapphires have become very popular over the last year for engagement ring design.

How does Morgan & Co choose the right Parti Sapphire?

Defined Colours — We first define distinct Colour Zoning. Parti sapphires showcase separate, unblended zones of colour, often including combinations like blue, green, and yellow.

Ombre and Striped Effects — These zones can appear as gradients, stripes, or patches, creating intricate and one-of-a-kind patterns.

Contrast with Teal Sapphires — Unlike teal sapphires, where colours like blue and yellow mix to form an overall greenish hue, parti sapphires retain their individual colour boundaries.

Secondly we look into the Parti Sapphires unique qualities such as —

Dynamic Appearance — The distinct colours within parti sapphires shift subtly depending on lighting and viewing angles, enhancing their allure.

Nature’s Artwork — Each parti sapphire is entirely unique, with no two stones featuring the same colour zoning patterns.

            We source only ethical sapphires

            Australian Sapphires —

Parti sapphires are predominantly found in Australia, our clients love the thought of owning a precious natural gem that has been mined from the rich geographical regions of Australia. Parti sapphires can also be found in Madagascar, India, Sir Lanka and Kenya.

However Australian Parti Sapphires are most desirable due to their reputation for unique colour compositions.

Australia has very  strict mining standards that  ensures ethical practices and traceable origins. All our Parti Sapphires are certified by the strictest standards.

How do I care for a Parti Sapphire?

Sapphires are second only to diamonds in terms of durability. Making both sapphires and parti sapphires a great choice for engagement rings.

All rings no matter what stones are featured will over time have built up dirt under and around the setting. Soaping the ring in warm water mixed with morning fresh detergent and a few sprays of windex and left over night will dislodge the dirt and oils. Gently using a soft toothbrush brush away any leftover debris. Morgan Co Jewellery offers  lifetime cleaning on all their engagement rings. So book in, drop off your ring and enjoy a complementary coffee while your beautiful ring is professionally cleaned.

Parti sapphires are a celebration of nature’s artistry, combining vivid colour contrasts and rare beauty. Their distinct colour zoning and inherent uniqueness set them apart from traditional sapphires, making them an exceptional choice for those seeking a gemstone that’s as distinctive as it is beautiful.

I also felt like it represented my partners unique style and added a special touch to her forever piece."

Was there anything in particular that drew you to work with us?

"I was referred to Morgan & Co by a close friend who raved about his experience with Morgan and Laura. They helped him plan his proposal, and after consulting with them myself, I realised they're true experts who genuinely care about their clients. Their continued engagement with customers on social media after proposals highlights their commitment to building lasting relationships and ensuring a positive experience beyond the sale."

Where did you and your partner meet?

Blue Fluorescence in Diamonds: What Does It Really Mean?

Blue Fluorescence in Diamonds: What Does It Really Mean?

When it comes to diamonds, there’s a lot of fascination—and confusion—around blue fluorescence. Is it good? Is it bad? Does it make your diamond look dull, milky, or better than non-fluorescent stones? These are questions I get asked often during consultations, so let’s unravel the mystery of blue fluorescence in diamonds together.

What Is Blue Fluorescence in a Diamond?

Blue fluorescence is a natural characteristic found in some diamonds. When exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light—like sunlight or a blacklight—these diamonds emit a soft blue glow. The effect ranges from faint to very strong, depending on the stone. While this may sound unusual, fluorescence is actually quite common, with around 30% of diamonds exhibiting some level of it.

But what does this mean for the appearance of your diamond? That’s where things get interesting—and where misconceptions often take over.

Image: Diamonds shown under UV light to highlight florescent effect in diamonds which have strong florescence

Blue Fluorescence Diamonds Are Bad, Right?

Well, as co-Owner of Morgan & Co owner, Laura Penkalla, aptly puts it: “It depends.”

The debate around blue fluorescence in diamonds seems never-ending. Much of the confusion comes from misinformation, outdated ideas, and a lack of understanding about what actually causes certain visual effects. In actual fact, when chosen carefully, diamonds with blue fluorescence can actually look better than non-fluorescent stones.

What Causes a Diamond to Look Blue in Sunlight?

The appearance of blue in a diamond isn’t always fluorescence at play. Often, it’s simply a reflection of the blue sky. Diamonds are expert light performers, so they reflect and refract colours from their surroundings, including the sky above.

Fluorescence only affects the diamond under UV light, and when paired with certain inclusions, it can sometimes create a milky or cloudy effect. However, this isn’t true for all fluorescent diamonds. Experts, like our diamond sources at Morgan & Co, perform rigorous tests to ensure the if a diamond is chosen which has fluorescence that it enhances their beauty, not detracts from it.

            Debunking Misconceptions About Fluorescence

            1. “Fluorescent Diamonds Look Dull”
Not necessarily! The level of fluorescence in a diamond doesn’t automatically make it dull. For example, a diamond with strong blue fluorescence can appear brighter and whiter in shaded daylight, especially if it’s masking a slight yellow tint.

            2. “Fluorescent Diamonds Are Milky”
While some fluorescent diamonds can appear milky, this effect is often due to certain types of inclusions that interact with the UV light. Skilled diamond sources reject these stones. A well-selected fluorescent diamond will appear just as clear and brilliant as a non-fluorescent one, indoors and outdoors.

How Fluorescence Can Enhance a Diamond

Here’s the surprising part: blue fluorescence can actually improve the appearance of certain diamonds. Strong blue fluorescence often counteracts yellow undertones in diamonds graded G or lower, making them look whiter in daylight.

For example, a G-colour diamond with blue fluorescence might look closer to a D-colour diamond—saving you money while still achieving a stunning look. This often comes into play when we are choosing a natural diamond and need to stick to a client's budget.

Natural Diamonds vs. Lab-Grown Diamonds: Fluorescence and Pricing

When purchasing a natural diamond, you may find yourself having to compromise on certain factors, such as size, quality, or the presence of fluorescence, to stay within your budget. However, lab-grown diamonds—thanks to their lower price point—offer more flexibility. You can prioritise higher quality, including better color and cut grades, without sacrificing affordability.

That said, fluorescence isn’t a “flaw” to avoid. Instead, it’s one of many factors to consider when choosing the right diamond for your budget and preferences.

The Final Word on Blue Fluorescence

Blue fluorescence in a diamond isn’t inherently good or bad — it’s all about context. When carefully selected, a fluorescent diamond can be as breathtaking as any non-fluorescent stone, sometimes even more so.

At the end of the day, the goal is to find a diamond that speaks to your style, fits your budget, and sparkles in every kind of light. Whether it glows blue under UV light or not, your diamond should be a true reflection of you.
