How to Choose the Perfect Engagement Ring for You

Finding the perfect engagement ring can be a daunting task, but Morgan & Co is here to help you on this exciting journey.

    Understanding Your Partner's Style

Step one: decode your partner's style. Pay attention to their fashion sense, favourite colours, and any hints they've dropped. Classic or modern? Minimalist or bold? Let their expertise guide you.

    Selecting The Right Diamond Shape

The shape of the diamond matters. Round for maximum sparkle, oval for elongated fingers - each shape has its charm. Check out our engagement ring design options here: https://morgancojewellery.com.au/collections/engagement-rings

    Metal Choice Matters Too

Don't forget about the metal. Yellow gold, white gold, platinum - classic choices. But rose gold is all the rage for its romantic hue.

    Budget Considerations

Beauty on a budget? Absolutely. At Morgan & Co, we offer quality Australian made rings at various price points. No need to break the bank.

    The Different Shapes of Diamonds

Choosing a diamond for your engagement ring? Shape matters. Round, princess, oval, cushion, or pear - each shape has its own unique charm. Explore our options here

    Round Cut Diamonds

Round cut diamonds are the classic choice, loved for their unmatched brilliance. Shine bright like a round diamond.

    Princess Cut Diamonds

For a modern twist, go for a princess cut diamond. Its sharp corners and elegant sparkle will make you feel like royalty.

    Oval Cut Diamonds

Looking for something traditional yet distinctive? An oval cut diamond is the way to go. It's a twist on the classic round shape.

    Cushion Cut Diamonds

Want vintage charm? Choose a cushion cut diamond, also known as "pillow-cut". It highlights clarity over sparkle and is a popular choice among brides-to-be.

    Pear Shaped Diamonds

Combine the best of round and marquise cuts with a pear-shaped diamond. Its teardrop shape will make you stand out in any setting.

Diamond Shape vs Diamond Cut: What's The Difference?

Shape and cut are not the same. Shape refers to the geometric form of the gem, while cut is about how well it's executed. Symmetry, proportions, and polish matter. Learn more about this distinction here.

At Morgan & Co, we offer ethically sourced diamonds in various shapes. From timeless elegance to cutting-edge chic, we've got the perfect diamond for everyone. Quality guaranteed, crafted on Australia's Sunshine Coast

    Understanding Different Ring Cuts

When it comes to engagement rings on the Sunshine Coast, knowing your diamond cuts is key. It's essential to have a few top picks when you're looking for an engagement ring on the Sunshine Coast, since each cut boasts its own unique sparkle and flair.

    Exploring Popular Diamond Cuts

Diamonds come in all shapes and sizes, but some cuts are more popular than others. The classic round brilliant cut is a timeless favourite, known for its exceptional brilliance and fire. Other popular options include princess, oval, pear, cushion, emerald, and marquise cuts. For more information on these cuts, check out GIA's Gem Encyclopedia.

Matching a Cut to Personal Style

When choosing a diamond cut, it's important to consider your partner's personal style. If they love vintage looks, an Asscher or old European cut could be perfect. For a more modern vibe, princess or radiant-cut diamonds are a great choice. Morgan & Co Jewellery, based on the Sunshine Coast, can help you find the perfect diamond shape to match your partner's style.

Keep in mind that choosing a less common shape can also help stretch your budget, as round brilliants tend to be more expensive due to their high demand and the waste produced during the cutting process.

Choosing The Right Metal For Your Engagement Ring

Your engagement ring is a symbol of your love and commitment, so pick a metal that will last. Different metals used for engagement rings, such as yellow gold, white gold, silver, platinum and rose gold each have their own distinct characteristics.

Pros and Cons of Different Metals

    • Yellow Gold: Classic choice but may scratch easily.
    • White Gold: Durable and modern but requires occasional re-plating.
    • Silver: Affordable option but not as durable as other metals.
    • Rose Gold: Trendy and warm-toned yet less common in men's bands.

    Trending Options Like Rose Gold

In recent years, rose gold has become a popular choice for engagement rings. This pink-hued precious metal offers a romantic twist on traditional styles while maintaining durability. It also complements all skin tones beautifully.

When deciding on the type of metal, consider your partner's lifestyle. Some metals are more prone to scratches or require regular maintenance which might not be ideal if they lead an active life or work with their hands often.

Balancing Diamond Carat Size with Budget

When choosing a diamond for an engagement ring, carat size is often the first thing people consider. Don't just focus on carat size; make sure to take into account colour grade and clarity too. Strive for a balance between carat size, colour grade, and clarity.

    Understanding Carat Sizes

Carat refers to the weight of a diamond, not its size. Two diamonds of equal carats can look different in size depending on how they're cut.

Tips for Balancing Quality with Cost

    • Determine Your Priorities: Decide what matters most - overall appearance, quality, or cost?
    • Be Flexible: Consider elements like colour grade and clarity, which are less noticeable than cut or carat.
    • Educate Yourself: Learn about the 4Cs (Carats, Cut, Color & Clarity). Gain insight into the 4Cs and how they impact a ring's beauty and price to find balance between carats and budget.

Balance diamond carats with budget by understanding what each aspect contributes to a ring's beauty and price. Be open-minded enough to adjust expectations based on these insights.

Why You Should Only Buy Certified Diamonds

When it comes to selecting an engagement ring, a certified diamond is the only way to ensure you're getting a genuine and high-quality stone. A certified diamond ensures that you're getting a high-quality and authentic stone, giving you peace of mind about your investment.

    What Does Certification Mean?

Certification means that a third-party gemological laboratory has evaluated and graded the stone based on its characteristics such as cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. This process ensures transparency and trustworthiness in the diamond industry.

Don't be fooled by diamonds with lower grades in colour and clarity. While they may be cheaper, they can compromise the overall appearance of the stone. Finding the perfect equilibrium between cost and excellence is key.

How Low Can You Go on Colour and Clarity?

Diamonds come in various colours ranging from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown). While D-F grade diamonds are top-tier, G-J grade diamonds offer excellent value for money while still appearing white to the naked eye.

In terms of clarity, Flawless (FL) or Internally Flawless (IF) stones have no visible imperfections under 10x magnification but they come with a premium price tag. On the other hand, Very Slightly Included (VS1-VS2) or Slightly Included (SI1-SI2) stones might contain minor flaws not noticeable without magnification, making them great choices for those looking to maximise their budget.

When it comes to buying a diamond, always choose a certified stone. It's the smart and safe choice for your investment.

Invest in your love story with a certified diamond engagement ring from Morgan & Co Jewellery on the Sunshine Coast. Ethically sourced and meticulously crafted, it's the perfect symbol of forever. #engagementring #diamonds

Prioritising Diamond Cut Over Other Factors

When it comes to choosing the perfect diamond for your engagement ring, renowned private jeweller Dan Moran advises prioritising the cut above all else. The reason behind this is that the cut greatly impacts how much light the stone reflects back - a characteristic known as its brilliance. So even if it means adjusting other factors like carat weight or colour grade, always aim for an excellent-cut diamond.

    Why is cut so important?

The cut of a diamond determines its ability to reflect light and create sparkle. A well-cut diamond will catch and refract light beautifully, making it appear larger and more brilliant than poorly cut stones of similar size or quality. In fact, a high-quality cut can even compensate for lower grades in colour or clarity by maximising sparkle and minimising visible flaws.

To ensure you're getting an excellently cut stone, consider working with expert jewellers who prioritise craftsmanship over mass production. At Morgan & Co on Australia's Sunshine Coast, we meticulously craft each piece using ethically sourced diamonds to bring your vision to life.

    Don't Compromise on Cut Quality

While balancing various aspects such as budget constraints and personal preferences are crucial when shopping for an engagement ring, never compromise on the quality of the diamond's cut. Remember that at the end of the day, what matters most is not just about size but also how brilliantly your chosen gem sparkles.

Prioritise diamond cut when choosing an engagement ring. It greatly impacts brilliance and can even compensate for lower grades in colour/clarity. #SunshineCoast #BespokeJewelry

Finding Out Your Partner's Ring Size Discreetly

Once you've selected the ideal engagement ring, ensuring it fits your partner is essential for a successful proposal. The other half? Making sure it fits your partner perfectly. Don't fret if you're uncertain about the exact size of your partner's finger - there are some subtle techniques to determine this without them being aware. There are a few discreet ways to figure this out without them knowing.

Creative Methods for Finding Out Their Size

    • Borrow one of their rings: If your partner already wears rings, borrow one when they're not looking and bring it to a jeweller who can determine its size.
    • Ask friends or family: Close friends or family members might know their ring size, especially if they've recently gone jewellery shopping together. Be careful though - make sure whoever you ask can keep a secret.
    • Sneaky measurement while sleeping: This method requires stealth but could be quite effective. When your partner is in deep sleep, wrap a piece of string around their ring finger and mark where it overlaps with a pen. Later on, measure the length of the string up to the marked area with a ruler.

No matter which method you choose, remember that finding an engagement ring should be a fun and exciting journey rather than a stressful task. Don't stress too much over getting an exact fit; we offer resizing services after purchase if needed.

Common Questions Our Clients Ask Us About Gold

Common Questions Our Clients Ask Us About Gold

In this guide, we'll explore the different types of gold used in engagement rings, their unique properties and characteristics, and how to choose the perfect gold for your engagement ring. Let's get started!

Can I change the gold colour of my existing engagement or dress ring?

Yes, it is possible to change your existing rings from one gold colour to another. At Morgan & Co we can guide you through the steps we take to make this change happen.

Depending on what kind of gold you have, the process of changing the colour may be slightly different. For example, if you have white gold, you can have it replaced in yellow gold, rose gold, or any other colour you choose. Alternatively, if you have yellow gold, it can be rhodium plated to look like white gold.

The process of changing the colour of your rings will involve working closely with the experienced team at Morgan & Co. We have recently remodelled a client's engagement ring from white gold to yellow gold and you can see the results here. Before we begin the process, we will need to assess the condition of your existing rings and determine the best way forward to achieve your desired colour and design. In some cases, Morgan & Co may simply be able to restore the original colour of the rings, as opposed to changing it altogether. This will help to bring its sparkle and shine back to life. Alternatively, you may wish to change the ring’s setting and style altogether and this can also be achieved.

Overall, if you wish to change the colour of your existing rings, it is possible and there are several options available. It is important to discuss the available options with the team at Morgan & Co, Buderim, to ensure the best outcome.

What is the best metal to choose when designing my engagement ring?

Engagement rings are a symbol of love and commitment, and typically the metal chosen for the engagement ring is gold. Gold is by far the most popular metal for engagement rings, due to its luxurious look and feel. Gold is also durable and more affordable than other precious metals like platinum. Gold is available in a variety of colours: yellow, rose, and white. Gold engagement rings are timeless and will be treasured for years to come.

Yellow gold is a timeless classic and is the traditional choice for engagement rings. It has a warm, yellow hue that is both stylish and elegant, and is resistant to tarnish. Gold is also a symbol of wealth and prosperity, and many people choose yellow gold for its durability and strength. Another popular choice is white gold, which has a bright, silver-like hue that is perfect for creating a modern look. Rose gold is another gold option and is perfect for those looking for a more romantic and feminine look, and depending on your colourings, you may choose rose gold to match your skin tone.

What is the difference between 9ct, 14ct, 18ct and rose gold

Many of our clients at Morgan & Co can be confused about what the differences are between gold metals. 9ct gold is an alloy of gold that contains 37.5% of pure gold, along with other metals.

9ct gold has a more yellowish hue compared to 14 and 18ct gold. Morgan & Co do not recommend 9ct gold for engagement rings due to the metals inflexibility that over time will cause the band to snap.

14ct gold is an alloy of gold that contains 58.3% of pure gold, along with other metals and  18ct gold is an alloy of gold that contains 75% of pure gold, along with other metals. So basically the difference between 14ct and 18ct is the amount of pure cold component.

In terms of colour, 14k and 18k gold is quite subtle, but 18k gold will appear slightly richer in colour than 14k gold. When considering the cost between the two, 18ct gold is more expensive due to the higher gold content. Out of the three options, 9ct gold is the least expensive.

Can I use my pre-loved gold to make my engagement ring or wedding band?

Yes, at Morgan & Co we can certainly incorporate your pre-loved gold into your beautiful engagement or dress ring. Here is an example of a ring where we added our client’s grandfather's gold nuggets to the band as a sentimental touch. Here at Morgan & Co we will be able to help you through this process and craft your ring to perfection, while holding onto any sentimental value from old gold. Using your own gold to create an engagement ring is a great way to make the ring even more special and meaningful.

Using your own gold is a great way to keep the cost down whilst adding to the sentiment of your beautiful piece. There are a few different ways to use your gold to create your engagement ring. Morgan & Co can melt down your gold to create the band and then set a stone in the setting of your choice. Your engagement ring will be special because it was made with your own gold, keeping its sentiment.

What colour gold suits my skin tone?

At Morgan & Co we see many clients who are not sure what colour gold they should choose for their engagement ring or dress ring design. Many times our clients have bought, for example, white gold jewellery since they were teenagers, and have never considered any other colour and once they try on other options, they realise that for their forever piece they will opt for a different colour that may suit their tone more.

When choosing gold for your skin tone, Morgan & Co take into consideration the shades of your skin, and the hues of gold that will flatter your complexion the most. For instance, if you have a light complexion, we recommend a warm gold, such as a yellow-toned gold. This type of gold will bring out the natural undertones of your skin, while also providing a subtle hint of colour. On the other hand, those with medium or dark skin tones might choose a cooler gold, such as a platinum or white gold. This type of gold will help to bring out the natural highlights of your skin, while also adding depth and dimension.

Morgan & Co have seen a demand for rose gold engagement rings and the trend only seems to be growing. Rose gold is a beautiful blend of both gold and copper, its warm hues flatter most skin types, especially medium, pink and olive skin tones.

Another option that many couples opt for is a two toned engagement ring. This means the band is yellow or rose gold and the setting in white gold or platinum. The reason client's opt for this look is if they are looking for a more classic or traditional looking engagement ring. Having a white gold setting also allows the diamond to be the true hero - making it pop and sparkle. If the claws are made in yellow gold, they can be the feature and can close down the diamond a little bit more than a white gold or platinum setting would. If a client is working towards a budget and can afford a small but high quality diamond, we would recommend they use white gold or platinum claws so that the quality of the diamond shines and the stone appears larger. These are the tips that the team at Morgan & Co will discuss with you to ensure you are making the right choice for you, your budget and the style you're trying to achieve.

Ultimately, choosing the right gold for your skin tone can be a fun and exciting experience. With a little help and experimentation from Morgan & Co you’ll be able to find the perfect gold that enhances and complements your look. Don’t forget that these days mixing and matching pieces of jewellery in different gold colours is absolutely fine. Even if you opt for a yellow gold engagement ring and own other white gold pieces, you can absolutely wear both!

Should my partner have the same wedding band colour as mine?

When it comes to deciding on wedding bands for couples, the choice is ultimately up to the two of you. Many couples choose to have matching or complementary wedding bands, as a symbol of their commitment and connection to each other. If you and your husband-to-be are considering matching wedding bands, there are a few things to consider.

Firstly, consider the style and shape of the band. Will it need to match the shape and style of your own wedding band or would you prefer something different for your partner? Some couples choose to have matching bands with the same design, while some opt for complementary bands in the same colour gold, but in a different style.

It’s also important to think about the metal of the band. Should it match the metal of your own band, or would you prefer something different? Different metals can give the bands a unique look, while still maintaining the same overall design.

Finally, consider something extra, unique and special. Special engravings can be a unique way to express your commitment to each other and at Morgan & Co, we offer complimentary engraving for all male wedding bands.

Morgan & Co are happy to show you their ready to wear wedding bands or to help you design a wedding band that is unique to you. You can see our men’s and women’s wedding band collection here.

What is the most versatile gold colour for an engagement ring?

Choosing the right gold colour for your engagement ring can feel like a difficult decision. While there are many choices, yellow gold is the most versatile colour when it comes to matching other gold jewellery. Yellow gold is a classic shade that looks great with both white and yellow gold pieces. It can be mixed and matched with different styles and pieces to create a cohesive look. For example, a yellow gold engagement ring can be paired with a white gold necklace or bracelet for a subtle, complementary look. It also pairs nicely with yellow gold earrings, rings, and even watches.

Yellow gold can also be combined with gemstones for a more unique look. A yellow gold engagement ring could be set with a diamond or other gemstone for a stunning effect. The warmth of yellow gold also helps to bring out the colour of the gemstone. This versatility makes yellow gold a great choice for engagement rings, as it can be matched with a wide range of pieces and styles.

No matter what colour is more versatile the most important thing is that you choose the colour gold that you feel comfortable wearing. One thing to keep in mind though is that you will be wearing your engagement ring every day for the rest of your life. Morgan & Co will help you navigate this decision and you will walk away knowing you have made the right choice for you.

Does Morgan & Co use recycled gold?

It is becoming increasingly popular among the jewellery industry to use recycled gold due to  the ethical and environmental benefits associated with it. Recycled gold is a great option for our clients who are looking for an environmentally friendly alternative to mined gold. It is a sustainable and ethical choice as it does not require any new gold to be mined.

Aside from being more environmentally friendly,  recycled gold is also gaining popularity due to its unique story. For example, our clients love the idea that their jewellery is made from gold that has been reused and repurposed. Our clients love the idea that their ring has a unique story, therefore making the ring  even more meaningful. You can read some of our beautiful remodelling stories here. These stories are our client’s own personal stories, memories and sentimental moments passed down through heirloom jewellery.

Overall, it is clear that recycled gold is becoming increasingly popular. Its environmental benefits, affordability, and unique stories make it a desirable choice for both jewellers and consumers. As more people become aware of the benefits of recycled gold, it is sure to become even more popular in the future.

Where does Morgan & Co source their new gold from?

Morgan & Co primarily source their gold from Australia. Not many people realise that Australia is a major gold producer, ranking in the top 10 global producers of gold. In 2018, Australia produced over 300 tons of gold, making it one of the largest gold producers in the world. Our largest gold location is called the Super Pit which is located in Kalgoorlie.

      Conclusion

It is clear from the above discussion that there is no one-size-fits-all answer when considering the right gold for your ring. The type of gold chosen depends on a variety of factors, such as budget, desired colour, and desired durability. Gold may come in a variety of colours, such as yellow, white and rose. The more expensive the gold, the more durable it is likely to be. Ultimately, it is important to ask Morgan & Co for advice when selecting the best gold for a ring, as they have the expertise and experience to provide the best advice. You can book your free, no obligation consultation in studio here. Morgan & Co also offer virtual consultations.
