7 Common Engagement Ring Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

7 Common Engagement Ring Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

6 min read

At Morgan & Co, we believe that designing an engagement ring isn't just about choosing a beautiful diamond. It's about creating a piece that is practical, timeless, and made to last a lifetime. While social media and Pinterest are wonderful sources of inspiration, they don't always show you what makes an engagement ring truly wearable for everyday life.

One of the biggest advantages of choosing a custom engagement ring is that every design decision is intentional. We take the time to understand your lifestyle, preferences and budget, ensuring your ring isn't just beautiful on the day you receive it, but still beautiful decades from now.

Here are some of the most common engagement ring mistakes we see, and how we help our clients avoid them.

1. Prioritising Carat Size Over Cut Grade

It's easy to be drawn to the biggest diamond your budget allows. After all, carat weight is often the first thing people ask about.

But here's the truth...

A larger diamond with a poor cut can actually look less impressive than a smaller diamond with an excellent cut.

The cut of a diamond determines how light enters and reflects back to your eye. This is what creates the sparkle, fire and brilliance that diamonds are famous for. Even an expensive diamond can appear dull, dark or lifeless if it hasn't been cut well.

At Morgan & Co, we spend considerable time educating our clients on the importance of cut quality. We hand-select diamonds based on much more than just size, helping you achieve maximum beauty within your budget.

In many cases, choosing a slightly smaller diamond with an exceptional cut creates a far more breathtaking engagement ring than simply chasing a higher carat weight.

2. Choosing a Solitaire Without a Gallery Rail

One of the most overlooked design features on an engagement ring is something many people have never even heard of - a gallery rail.

A gallery rail is a small band of precious metal that sits beneath the diamond, connecting the claws together.

While it might seem like a tiny detail, it plays a significant role in protecting your diamond.

The gallery rail helps:

  • Strengthen the setting
  • Keep the claws secure
  • Protect the underside of the diamond
  • Reduce movement over time
  • Increase the longevity of the setting

Many mass-produced solitaire rings omit this feature to create a very delicate appearance.

While beautiful, these designs can be less durable for everyday wear.

Every custom engagement ring we design is carefully assessed to determine whether a gallery rail will improve the strength and longevity of the setting, without compromising the overall aesthetic.

3. Not Protecting the Points of Fancy-Shaped Diamonds

Fancy-shaped diamonds like pear, marquise, heart and princess cuts are absolutely stunning.

However, they also require a little more thought when it comes to setting design.

The pointed ends of these diamonds are naturally the weakest part of the stone.

Without adequate protection, they're more susceptible to accidental chips if knocked against hard surfaces.

That's why we almost always recommend protective V-claws or specially designed claws that shield these vulnerable points.

It's a subtle design feature that many people don't notice, but it can make all the difference in preserving your diamond for decades to come.

When designing your custom ring, we carefully consider the shape of your diamond and create a setting that offers both elegance and protection.

4. Choosing an Engagement Ring Crafted in 9ct Gold

Many people assume that all gold is created equal.

In reality, the gold content plays an important role in the durability and longevity of your engagement ring.

9ct gold contains 37.5% pure gold, with the remaining percentage made up of other metal alloys.

While it is a perfectly acceptable choice for many types of jewellery, engagement rings are worn almost every single day.

Over a lifetime, they'll experience thousands of knocks, bumps and years of daily wear.

For this reason, we generally recommend 14ct or 18ct gold for engagement rings.

These alloys offer:

  • Greater longevity
  • Better colour
  • Higher intrinsic value
  • Excellent durability for everyday wear

During your consultation, we'll discuss the advantages of each gold purity so you can make an informed decision based on your lifestyle and budget.

5. Choosing a Band That Is Too Thin for the Centre Diamond

Ultra-thin bands have become incredibly popular over recent years.

They photograph beautifully and create the illusion of making the centre diamond appear larger.

However, there is a balance.

A band that is too thin for the size of the centre stone may be more susceptible to:

  • Bending
  • Warping
  • Losing its shape
  • Requiring repairs over time

This doesn't mean delicate bands aren't beautiful, it simply means they need to be proportionate to the diamond they're supporting.

At Morgan & Co, we customise every engagement ring so the band width complements the size of the centre stone, creating a design that feels balanced, comfortable and built to last. We will not go any lower than 1.8mm wide but we also have significant thickness with our bands to ensure lasting integrity.

6. Setting the Diamond Too High

A high-set diamond can certainly create a dramatic, elegant profile.

But if it's set unnecessarily high, it may become something you notice every single day.

High settings are more likely to:

  • Catch on clothing
  • Hit door frames
  • Knock against benches
  • Become frustrating during everyday activities

The ideal setting allows enough light to enter the diamond and a wedding band to sit flush, while keeping it low enough to remain practical.

This is something we discuss with every client.

Your job, hobbies and daily lifestyle all influence the ideal setting height.

Whether you're working in healthcare, with young children, in an office or outdoors, we'll customise the design to suit how you actually live.

7. Ignoring the Ratio of Fancy-Shaped Diamonds

When shopping for oval, pear, marquise, emerald or radiant diamonds, many people focus purely on carat weight.

But another factor is just as important...

The ratio.

A diamond's ratio refers to its length compared to its width.

This dramatically changes how the diamond appears.

For example:

  • Some people love long, elegant ovals.
  • Others prefer shorter, fuller ovals.
  • Pear diamonds can appear soft and rounded or beautifully elongated.
  • Marquise diamonds can look delicate and graceful or bold and dramatic.

There isn't a right or wrong ratio.

It's entirely personal preference.

One of the biggest benefits of designing a custom engagement ring is that we source multiple diamond options for you to compare side by side.

This allows you to discover which proportions speak to you before committing to one you'll wear every day.

It's one of those details many people don't realise matters—until they see the difference in person.

Why Custom Design Makes All the Difference

Every engagement ring tells a story, but the best rings are about more than just beauty. They're thoughtfully designed to suit your lifestyle, protect your investment and stand the test of time.

At Morgan & Co, every engagement ring is custom made from the ground up. We don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, we guide you through every design decision - from selecting the perfect diamond and its proportions to choosing the ideal setting height, band width, metal and protective features.

We also provide detailed CAD designs before your ring is crafted, allowing you to visualise every angle and refine the design before production begins. This collaborative process ensures your engagement ring is not only beautiful but also practical, durable and uniquely yours.

If you're searching for a custom engagement ring on the Sunshine Coast, we'd love to welcome you to our Buderim studio. Together, we'll create a ring that captures your story while avoiding the common design mistakes that can affect both beauty and longevity. Because when you're creating a piece to wear for a lifetime, every detail matters.

With Love,
Morgan xo
