Can you claim GST back on an engagement ring from Morgan & Co Buderim?

4 min read

Short answer: yes sometimes. If you’re an Australian citizen flying out of Australia and you meet the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) rules, you can claim a refund of the GST included in your ring’s price. If you’re not departing Australia, you generally can’t get GST back (unless you’re a GST registered business buying the ring for genuine business use which an engagement ring usually isn’t). Below is a plain-English guide written for Morgan & Co clients in Buderim.

The two ways people say “claim GST”

  1. TRS at the airport when you leave Australia
If you’re departing internationally, the TRS lets any traveller (including Australian residents) claim back the GST/WET on eligible goods you take out of the country. Jewellery qualifies. You must show your passport, boarding pass, original tax invoices , and the ring itself at the TRS counter before you leave.

  2. Business GST credits (input tax credits) through the ATO
This is only for GST-registered businesses and business-use purchases. Personal items (like engagement rings) aren’t eligible for business GST credits.

TRS basics (what you must satisfy)

To claim TRS on your Morgan & Co ring at the airport:

  • Spend at least AUD $300 (incl. GST) in total from the same ABN (multiple invoices allowed).

  • Buy within 60 days of your international departure.

  • Have a valid tax invoice showing:

    • Your name (and only your name) exactly as in your passport if the invoice is $1,000+,

    • Retailer name, address and ABN,

    • Date, description that matches the ring, and GST amount/total including GST.

  • Carry or wear the ring so ABF can sight it (jewellery can be worn). If something must be checked/oversized, get it sighted by ABF before check-in and take the stamped invoice to TRS.

  • Claim in person at the TRS facility: generally >30 minutes before an international flight (airports) or 1–4 hours before a cruise (seaports).

  • You can speed things up by pre-entering details in the official My TRS Claim app/site to generate a QR code.

Morgan & Co tip: ask us to include your full legal name on the invoice if your ring is $1,000+ that’s a TRS rule for high-value invoices. We’ll also ensure the invoice includes all the required details (ABN, description, GST, date).

How much GST do you get back?

Australia’s GST is 10%, but if your price is “GST-inclusive,” the refund is price ÷ 11.

  • Example: a $11,000 ring (incl. GST)  $1,000 refund.

  • Example: a $6,600 ring  $600 refund.
(That’s just the GST component WET doesn’t apply to jewellery.)

Big watch-outs (so you don’t have to pay it back later)

  • Bringing the ring back to Australia? You must declare it on your Incoming Passenger Card. If its value (together with other purchases) exceeds your duty-free concession ($900 per adult, $450 per child), you’ll have to repay GST/duty on the full value, not just the excess. Families can pool their concessions if they go through Customs together. Penalties apply for failing to declare.

  • Invoice timing (60-day rule): Your purchase date must fall within 60 days before you depart, and the goods must be exported when you leave. If ABF needs later proof of export, they can allow a short window to provide documents.

  • Checked vs carry-on: TRS officers can insist you carry or wear the goods for inspection. If you must check the ring (rare for jewellery), see an ABF Client Services counter before check-in to have the goods sighted and the invoice stamped, then present that at TRS.

  • Name mismatch on $1k+ invoices: If the invoice is $1,000 or more, it must show your name exactly as in your passport. If the ring is a gift, the claimant’s name needs to be on the invoice. (The payment method doesn’t matter; the invoice details do.)

Step-by-step: claiming TRS on a Morgan & Co engagement ring

  1. Before you buy: Tell us you’ll be claiming TRS and the date you fly. We’ll make sure your invoice date is within 60 days of departure and, if $1,000+, print your passport name and address on the invoice.

  2. At pickup: Take the original paper tax invoice and your passport details.

  3. Before you go to the airport: Optional but recommended create your TRS QR code online to speed processing.

  4. At the airport: Wear or carry the ring. Go to the TRS counter with your passport, boarding pass, invoice, and ring. Claim 30 minutes before departure (leave extra time; queues happen).

  5. After your trip: If you bring the ring back and your combined goods exceed your concession, declare it and be prepared to repay GST/duty. Families can pool concessions.

Can I claim GST if I’m not flying overseas?

No not via TRS. TRS is only for departing travellers who take the goods out of Australia. If you’re staying in Australia, there’s no GST refund.

What about claiming through my business?

You can only claim input tax credits if you’re GST registered and the purchase is for your enterprise (and you keep proper records and apportion any private use). An engagement ring is personal, so it won’t qualify for business GST credits.

Quick FAQ

Does citizenship matter?
No. TRS is about departing travellers, not nationality. Australian residents can claim if they meet the rules.

Can I use multiple invoices from Morgan & Co?
Yes so long as they’re from the same ABN, total $300+, and are within 60 days of departure. Bring all originals.

What if my ring won’t be ready until after 60 days?
Talk to us about timing. TRS is based on invoice date and export within 60 days, so we’ll work with you on collection/invoicing so you’re eligible.

How is the refund paid?
ABF offers payment to a card or bank account after processing. (Processing time varies.) Use the My TRS Claim QR to streamline the counter process.

Do kids get a concession too?
Yes $450 per child. Concessions can be pooled within a family returning together.
