Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real? Everything You Need to Know Before Choosing Your Engagement Ring

Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real? Everything You Need to Know Before Choosing Your Engagement Ring

7 min read

If you've been researching Sunshine Coast engagement rings, you've probably come across one question time and time again:

"Are lab-grown diamonds actually real?"

As Buderim jewellers, it's one of the questions we're asked almost every day.

The short answer?

Yes, absolutely.

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds in every sense of the word. They sparkle the same, are graded the same and are made from the exact same material as natural diamonds. The only difference is how they're formed.

At Morgan & Co, we specialise in custom engagement rings on the Sunshine Coast, and we proudly offer both natural and lab-grown diamonds. We genuinely don't believe one is "better" than the other. Every couple has different priorities, and choosing the right diamond comes down to what's most important to you.

Whether you value rarity, history, size, budget or a combination of all four, our role is to educate you and help you make the right decision for your forever ring.

Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real?

Yes.

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond, not a diamond simulant.

Many people confuse lab-grown diamonds with cubic zirconia or moissanite, but they're completely different gemstones.

A lab-grown diamond has exactly the same:

  • Chemical composition

  • Crystal structure

  • Hardness

  • Fire

  • Brilliance

  • Sparkle

Even trained gemologists can't tell the difference between a natural and lab-grown diamond with the naked eye.

Both are made from crystallised carbon and both rank 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, making them the hardest known natural material.

Both natural and lab-grown diamonds are also graded using the same internationally recognised standards based on the famous 4Cs:

  • Cut

  • Colour

  • Clarity

  • Carat Weight

They are certified by respected laboratories, including the International Gemological Institute (IGI) and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).

So if you've ever wondered whether a lab-grown diamond is "fake", the answer is a definite no.

It's simply a diamond that was grown in a laboratory instead of forming naturally beneath the Earth's surface over billions of years.

How Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Made?

The science behind lab-grown diamonds sounds incredibly technical, but the concept is actually quite simple.

Natural diamonds are created deep beneath the Earth's surface under enormous heat and pressure over billions of years.

Lab-grown diamonds recreate these same conditions inside a highly controlled environment, allowing a diamond crystal to grow over a matter of weeks.

There are two primary methods used.

High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT)

As the name suggests, this method recreates the extreme pressure and temperatures found naturally beneath the Earth's surface.

Carbon is compressed under immense pressure until it forms a diamond crystal.

Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD)

A tiny diamond "seed" is placed inside a specialised chamber.

Carbon-rich gases are introduced and heated until carbon atoms attach themselves to the seed, gradually building layer upon layer until a full diamond crystal forms.

Once the rough diamond has grown, it's cut, polished and graded exactly the same way as a natural diamond.

The result is a real diamond with the same beauty, brilliance and durability.

Why Do Lab-Grown Diamonds Look Bigger for Your Budget?

One of the biggest reasons couples choose a lab-grown diamond is simple...

Value.

Because lab-grown diamonds can be produced in a controlled environment rather than mined, they typically cost significantly less than natural diamonds of the same quality.

This allows many couples to choose:

  • A larger centre diamond

  • A higher colour grade

  • A higher clarity grade

  • Or a combination of all three

At Morgan & Co, our custom lab-grown diamond solitaire engagement rings typically range between $6,000 and $8,000, depending on the size of the diamond, the complexity of the design and whether you choose 14ct or 18ct gold.

By comparison, a custom natural diamond solitaire engagement ring generally starts from around $14,000, with the final investment depending on the diamond's size, quality and rarity.

Many couples who visit our Buderim jewellery studio are surprised by just how much further their budget can stretch with a lab-grown diamond.

For first-home buyers, couples planning a wedding, or those saving for travel or other life goals, lab-grown diamonds often make it possible to achieve the look they've always dreamed of without compromising on size or quality.

So... Which Diamond Is Better?

This is probably the question we're asked most as Sunshine Coast jewellers.

Our answer?

Neither.

There simply isn't one that's objectively better than the other.

Instead, the better diamond is the one that aligns with your priorities.

Some people have always dreamed of owning a natural diamond because of its rarity and the incredible story behind it—a gemstone created by nature over billions of years.

Others are more interested in maximising their budget by choosing a larger diamond with exceptional colour and clarity.

Both decisions are equally valid.

At Morgan & Co, we don't steer our clients towards one option.

Instead, we educate, compare and help you choose the diamond that's right for you.

Understanding the Trade-Offs

Every engagement ring purchase involves balancing priorities.

If you choose a natural diamond, you'll generally need to compromise somewhere, depending on your budget.

That might mean choosing:

  • A slightly smaller carat weight.

  • A slightly lower colour grade.

  • A slightly lower clarity grade.

This doesn't mean the diamond won't be beautiful.

In fact, many of the natural diamonds we source are absolutely breathtaking.

It simply reflects the rarity of natural diamonds and the premium placed on them.

On the other hand, if size is important to you, a lab-grown diamond may allow you to achieve a noticeably larger centre stone while remaining within the same budget.

Some clients tell us they've always wanted a natural diamond, regardless of size.

Others would rather maximise the visual impact of their ring with a larger lab-grown diamond.

Neither choice is wrong.

Our job is simply to help you understand the differences so you can make an informed decision you'll feel confident about for years to come.

Seeing Natural and Lab-Grown Diamonds Side by Side

One of the biggest advantages of visiting our Buderim jewellery studio is seeing both options in person.

Many people arrive expecting to instantly spot the difference.

Almost everyone leaves surprised.

Visually, it's almost impossible to distinguish between a natural and lab-grown diamond.

Both sparkle beautifully.

Both are incredibly durable.

Both are certified using the same grading system.

The biggest difference usually comes down to price and rarity—not appearance.

As experienced Sunshine Coast jewellers, we'll source multiple diamond options for you to compare side by side, allowing you to see different sizes, shapes, colour grades and proportions before making your decision.

Whether you're drawn to an oval, radiant, round brilliant, cushion or emerald cut diamond, seeing them in person makes all the difference.

Why More Couples Are Choosing Custom Engagement Rings

One of the biggest benefits of choosing a custom engagement ring is that every decision is made around you.

Rather than choosing a ring that's already sitting in a display cabinet, we source your diamond first and then design the ring specifically around it.

This means we can customise:

  • Diamond size

  • Diamond shape

  • Setting height

  • Band width

  • Metal colour

  • Claw style

  • Hidden details

  • Wedding band compatibility

Every couple has different priorities, and every ring we create reflects that.

It's one of the reasons so many couples searching for Sunshine Coast engagement rings choose to work with Morgan & Co.

Which Diamond Is Right for You?

Choosing an engagement ring is one of life's biggest decisions, and there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer.

The best diamond is the one that reflects your priorities, your budget and your story.

Whether that means a stunning lab-grown diamond that allows you to maximise size and quality, or a rare natural diamond formed over billions of years, we're here to help you make an informed decision with complete confidence.

If you're searching for Buderim jewellers, Sunshine Coast jewellers, or a trusted studio specialising in custom Sunshine Coast engagement rings, we'd love to welcome you to Morgan & Co.

Together, we'll compare natural and lab-grown diamonds, discuss your priorities, source exceptional stones, and design a ring that's uniquely yours.

Because at the end of the day, the most important thing isn't whether your diamond was formed beneath the Earth or grown in a laboratory.

It's that every time you look down at your hand, you absolutely love what you see.
